Frozen in time: inside the WW1 soldier's room left untouched for 100 years

02:05
French soldier Hubert Rochereau's room has been left exactly as it was when he went to fight - and die - for his country in the First World War 96-years-ago. The current owner of the house Daniel Fabre showed the Telegraph around the room which has been eerily frozen in time, with his blue officer's jacket sitting on a stand and his books and photos collecting dust on the mantelpiece. Second Lieutenant Rochereau died on 26 April 1918 in Belgium after being wounded in fighting near the village of Loker. He was awarded a posthumous Legion of Honour for bravery and his name is on the war memorial in his home village. The parents of the dragoons officer maintained his room exactly as it was the day he left for the front. When they sold the house in 1935, they made the new owners sign a clause stating that the bedroom where their son was born in 1896 could not be changed for 500 years. Pine marten invades football pitch and bites player

01:53
A Swiss football match was thrown into chaos when the pitch was invaded by a small feisty mustelid who ran onto the field and bit one of the players. Read more... A Swiss League match between FC Thun and Zurich was disrupted after a pine marten escaped onto the pitch on Sunday and evaded capture for over five minutes. The marten, which is similar to a weasel, appeared at one point to have be caught Zurich defender Loris Benito. But Benito was bitten for his troubles and it managed to escape again. Martens are known for their sharp teeth which are usually used to eat birds, berries and the occasional garden hose. So it was up to Zurich goalkeeper Davide Da Costa, armed with his gloves, to pick up the marten. The crowd applauded as Da Costa escorted the pitch invader off the field. Zurich went on to win 4-0. Deaf woman hears for the first time

02:42
The moment a woman, who had been deaf since birth and never heard a sound, hears for the first time and has her life transformed has been captured on film. Joanne Milne, 40, from Gateshead, was born deaf, and during her 20s also began to lose her vision due to the rare medical condition Usher Syndrome. But last month she was fitted with cochlear implants and after 40 years of silence the life-changing procedure has meant she is now able to hear. The incredible moment when she hears a nurse going through the days of the week was filmed by her mother and shows her bursting into tears in shock. "The switch-on was the most emotional and overwhelming experience of my life and I'm still in shock now. The first day everybody sounded robotic and I have to learn to recognise what these sounds are as I build a sound library in my brain," she said. "Hearing things for the first time is so, so emotional, from the ping of a light switch to running water. I can't stop crying. "I can already foresee how it's going to be life changing and the implants will get better and better over time, I'm so so happy." Ms Milne, who works for charity Sense, said she was now a lot more aware of things around her, which was a huge help given that she is also blind. "I'm also attempting to use the telephone at one point but it's one step at a time as it's all so daunting. It's the small things that are huge life changing experiences to me right now and this will probably last a few months," she said. "Over the last 48 hours hearing someone laughing behind me, the birds twittering and just being with friends - they didn't have to tap my arm or leg to get my attention, which is a massive leap for a deaf person." She thanked the team at the Midlands Implant Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, for the procedure and said their support had been fantastic. Kevin Spacey urges TV channels to give control to viewers

04:55
Double Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey has challenged TV channels to give "control" to their audiences or risk losing them at his address at the James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival. The Hollywood star, whose recent foray into television -- House Of Cards -- has been a commercial and critical hit after it was released on streaming service Netflix, said there was a danger of "thinking that something which is working now will necessarily work a year from now". Spacey, who gave the keynote James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival this evening, said: "Clearly the success of the Netflix model -- releasing the entire season of House Of Cards at once -- has proved one thing: the audience wants control. They want freedom. If they want to binge -- as they've been doing on House Of Cards -- then we should let them binge." The actor said that way of working "demonstrated that we have learned the lesson that the music industry didn't learn -- give people what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it in, at a reasonable price, and they'll more likely pay for it rather than steal it". Spacey, who starred in and was also executive producer on the show which was nominated for nine Emmy Awards, warned the audience of media executives that "labels" were becoming meaningless and they risked being "left behind". He said: "If you watch a TV show on your iPad is it no longer a TV show? The device and length are irrelevant ... For kids growing up now there's no difference watching Avatar on an iPad or watching YouTube on a TV and watching Game Of Thrones on their computer. It's all content. It's all story." Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson interview: 'I swapped £30,000 guitar for a £30 flute'

04:41
Ian Anderson explains his decision to start the flute and describes the moment he first heard Eric Clapton. In an exclusive clip from Neil McCormick's Needle Time, Ian Anderson reveals why he took up the flute and explains that his choice of instrument back in 1966 was completely arbitrary. After hearing Clapton play guitar with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Anderson gave up his "rather battered Fender Stratocaster" and instead picked up a flute and a Shure Unidyne III microphone. Anderson now fears that the guitar would be extremely valuable now. He had acquired it from Lemmy Kilmister, then of Reverend Black And The Rocking Vicars, and later of Hawkwind and Motorhead. Anderson admits that he is not technically a particularly advanced flute player, but argues that he brings an improvisational freedom to the instrument that classically trained players cannot match. "I was certainly not the best flute player in town," he says of Jethro Tull's breakthrough in the late Sixties. "I was the loudest flute player in town. That was my sole credential." Neil McCormick's Needle Time interview with Ian Anderson is broadcast Tuesday 18th June 2013 at 10pm on Vintage TV (Sky 369, Virgin 343 and Freesat 515) Get the latest headlines http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ Subscribe to The Telegraph http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=telegraphtv Like us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/telegraph.co.uk Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/telegraph Follow us on Google+ https://plus.google.com/102891355072777008500/ Telegraph.co.uk and YouTube.com/TelegraphTV are websites of The Daily Telegraph, the UK's best-selling quality daily newspaper providing news and analysis on UK and world events, business, sport, lifestyle and culture.

Windowless planes: is this the future of flying?

02:10
Display screens projecting the sky outside could line the cabin of aircrafts if windowless planes become reality Windowless planes could revolutionise air travel as airlines seek to reduce their spending on fuel and new supersonic aircraft are developed. With this in mind, a French design agency has released renderings showing its proposed design for a private jet completely devoid of windows in its fuselage. Instead, the cabin would be lined with thin screens that could display surrounding vistas or screen films and work presentations. Technicon Design states that removing windows from aircrafts will reduce their weight, thus reducing fuel and maintenance costs and giving designers greater opportunities to enhance and beautify their interiors. Gareth Davies, chief designer at Technicon Design, the company behind the concept, said: "Certain elements are already possible...such as the flexible displays. "The idea is to push the boundaries." He added that future technology would hopefully allow people to display whatever images they wanted, the content only being "limited by your imagination." For now, though, the technology remains only in the reach of the super-rich, but with the world's first commercial windowless plane already in the pipeline, it may be only a matter of time before the concept is adapted. US engineering firm Spike Aerospace is planning to launch a windowless cabin on board its luxury Spike S-512 Supersonic Jet in 2018, which the company says will feature similar display screen technology. Cashpoint cons: how to spot a dodgy ATM

02:49
A police detective explains how fraudsters tamper with a cashpoint – and what to do if you become a target of ATM fraud. Hidden cameras and devices designed to steal your Pin and debit card at the cashpoint cheat British cardholders out of £27.3 million every year. Even the most harmless-looking ATMs can contain a card-trapping device and at the same time spy on your every movement as you type in your Pin number. Once a fraudster has your card and Pin details in hand, they can instantly withdraw your savings or empty your account on a spending spree. But how can you possibly tell if the cashpoint you are about to use has been tampered with? Tony Blake, fraud prevention officer from the police's card and payments unit, says cashpoint cons can be impossible to spot until you have become a victim. But it's not too late to protect your savings, as Mr Blake explains in the video, above, revealing what to do if you become an unlucky target. The Last Islandman returns to his birthplace, the Great Blasket

05:48
The abandoned Great Blasket Island off the west coast of Ireland holds a special place in the heart of 92-year-old Dr Mike Carney who was born there. The Telegraph goes with him as he visits his birthplace for the last time. "I don't know if I will be able to make it," says Mike Carney, looking out across a wild stretch of water to the place where he was born 92 years ago. "I would like to put my feet down there one more time, but I wonder, is it possible?" Frankly, it seems crazy to try. The Great Blasket is famous throughout the world as a place where a remarkable community once lived, but it is remote, empty and inaccessible for most of the year. We are in the far west of Ireland and the weather is turning bad, making the ground treacherous underfoot. Dr Carney walks with a shuffle and wears a brace for his back. He is standing on the headland, looking out at the Blasket Sound. Under those waves there are many wrecks. To get to the island, the old man will have to negotiate a wet quayside, a rubber dinghy, a sharp climb up into a converted fishing boat and an hour's journey by sea, buffeted by the Atlantic waves. Then he will face the dinghy again and the derelict island slipway, slick with seaweed, leading to a steep rock path as slippery as ice. Yet he says: "I have the determination within me to do this." He has come a long way already to reach this point; more than three thousand miles from his retirement home in Massachusetts, then down the coast of Ireland from the airport to the far tip of the Dingle Peninsula, a finger of land that points back west. "I can't get the island out of my mind," says Dr Carney, with the strong accent of a man who grew up speaking only Gaelic and who has never let the language go. "I dream about the island at night. I dream about the way it was when we were young." The Great Blasket island was abandoned 60 years ago, as the result of a tragedy that had broken the hearts of the Carney family and their fellow islanders. The evacuation took place on 17 November 1953. Nobody has lived there permanently since. The houses are ruins. So what is calling Mike Carney now? Why is he risking his life to get back? Ralph McTell demonstrates fingerpick guitar techniques

05:42
English singer-songwriter Ralph McTell gives a guitar masterclass and discusses his career on Vintage TV's Needle Time Watch veteran singer-songwriter Ralph McTell demonstrates his blues fingerpicking and claw-hammer guitar techniques on Vintage TV's Needle Time in the above video. Renowned as one of the most accomplished acoustic guitarists in Britain, the 68-year-old recalls how listening to blues players like Reverend Gary Davis and Blind Boy Fuller made him first realise "how expressive the guitar can be", with simultaneous bass lines and melody lines. "I left a trail of ruined albums across the whole of south London lifting the needle on and off to try and figure out how they do a certain piece," he jokes. McTell is self-taught, doesn't read music, never practised scales, and admits he still doesn't know the names of many of the chords he plays, yet his fascination for the guitar shines through. The singer-songwriter also reveals that for a long time he felt burdened by the success of his most famous song, The Streets Of London (a number two hit in the UK in 1974), but has come to appreciate the naivety and innocence that has made it a folk standard. Approaching 70, McTell confesses that he doesn't know how long he will be able to continue performing. "A solo performer on stage needs everything working for him. Coming off stage now, I feel like I've done three rounds with Mohammed Ali. I will need to slow down. But as long as the voice and guitar keep going, so will I." Pussy Riot attacked with whips by police at Sochi

02:33
Russian punk group Pussy Riot is attacked by Cossack militia as they try to perform under a sign for the Sochi Olympics. Cossack militia attacked the Pussy Riot punk group with horsewhips on Wednesday as the group staged an impromptu performance under a sign advertising the Sochi Olympics. Six group members — five women and one man — donned their signature ski masks and were pulling out a guitar and microphone when at least 10 Cossacks and other security officials moved in. One guard appeared to use pepper spray, another whipped several group members while others ripped off their masks and threw the guitar in a rubbish bin. Police arrived and questioned witnesses, but no one was arrested. The Cossacks violently pulled masks from women's heads, beating group member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova with a whip as she lay on the ground. The incident lasted less than three minutes and one Pussy Riot member, a man wearing a bright yellow tank top, was left with blood on his face, saying he had been pushed to the ground. Pussy Riot, a performance-art collective involving a loose membership of feminists who edit their actions into music videos, has become an international flashpoint for those who contend Putin's government has exceeded its authority, particularly restricting human and gay rights. The group gained international attention in 2012 after barging into Moscow's main cathedral and performing a "punk prayer" in which they entreated the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Putin, who was on the verge of returning to the Russian presidency for a third term. Two members of the group, Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, were sentenced to two years in prison, but were released in December under an amnesty bill seen as a Kremlin effort to assuage critics before the Olympics.
