In Urumqi in western China we watch a Uyghur orchestra perform a personal concert for us. Then go to a magical dinner at the Grand Bazaar where we jam with some talented Uyghur musicians around a table filled with the finest Uyghur dishes. It was truly one of the highlights among many on this whirlwind tour across the Silk Road. ‪http://abigailwashburn.com‬ Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: ‪http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF‬ Tour Map: ‪http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬ Shot & Edited by Luke Mines

Silk Road Tour 9 - Urumqi - Abigail Washburn & The Village

At a marvelous dinner we had at the Grand Bazaar in Urumqi, a Uyghur musician plays the tambur and sings part of the eighth Muqam. The song is intercut with street scenes from the Uyghur quarter in Urumqi, in the winding alleyways just outside the Grand Bazaar. The Muqam is a cycle of 12 traditional songs that form the heart of the Uyghur musical canon. One of the hosts of our dinner told us that all 12 Muqam can take a whole day to perform. The Uyghurs are a Muslim minority in far western China that speak a Turkic language. This musician is named Abduqadeer Yar'eli and he is playing the dutar. The fresh squeezed pomegranate juice in Urumqi is delicious. ‪http://abigailwashburn.com‬ Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: ‪http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF‬ Tour Map: ‪http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬ Shot & Edited by Luke Mines

Silk Road Tour 1 - Hohhot - Abigail Washburn & The Village:

02:25
The first stop on the Silk Road Tour was Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia. We got ready to play our first show at a huge hall and collaborated with a Mongolian throat singer and a horse head fiddle player. Inner Mongolia is a province of China, but has a significant population of ethnic Mongolians. Some are still herders and the practice of throat singing is still alive. The singer and horse head fiddle player seen here told us they grew up in herding families in the countryside, but now they perform in a ge wu tuan 歌舞团, a kind of song and dance troupe. The beginning of the video was shot early morning at a Buddhist temple in town. Mongolians traditionally practice Tibetan Buddhism. The drumming and dancing is a form of Yang Ge, often practiced by elderly Han Chinese ladies across northern China. http://abigailwashburn.com Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF Tour Map: ‪http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬ Shot & Edited by Luke Mines

At a concert at a high school in Xi'ning we had the chance to collaborate with a number of Tibetan kids who sang beautiful folk songs they had learned growing up as nomads on the Tibetan Plateau. We also visited the Kumbum monastery in the mountains outside Xi'ning. SALA USA - Abigail Washburn feat. Kai Welch and The Shanghai Restoration Project

03:48
Abigail Washburn featuring Kai Welch & The Shanghai Restoration Project (Dave Liang) w/ Jamie Dick, Rayna Gellert, Brittany Haas, Alana Rocklin & Mrs. Biggers' 2nd grade Juilia Green Elementary School class Produced by Everybody! (Kevin Dailey, Abigail Washburn, Kai Welch, Dave Liang, Jamie Dick, Rayna Gellert, Brittany Haas, Alana Rocklin) Engineered by Kevin Dailey @ Sanctuary Studios, Nashville, TN Mixed by Kevin Dailey @ The Blue Room, Nashville, TN Additional Recording by Charlie Rose, Boston, MA Story: SALA USA is an American re-creation of a Chinese folk song called "Sala." This song is sung around the fire by the Qiang minority group in Western China to celebrate life. I learned this song 3 years ago while producing an album for children survivors of the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake called Afterquake (w/ Dave Liang of the electronic group Shanghai Restoration Project). The idea for Afterquake stemmed from an experience I had playing for students at earthquake disaster relocation schools around China in late 2008. After I would perform, all of the students wanted to teach me their songs and tell me their stories of loss and hope. Our connection through music was moving and healing. I couldn't stop thinking about the kids and wondering if there was a way I could help more. SALA USA is an offering, this side of the Pacific, to celebrate life as it is here and now as well as compassion for one another and our global home. The proceeds from the song will go towards the China branch of the Jane Goodall Institute's Roots & Shoots program, which is doing great work in the region the Qiang minority calls home. in the words of Jane Goodall: "Only if we understand can we care; only if we care will we help; only if we help shall all be saved" For more information on the origins of the song SALA and the original recording, Afterquake, produced with Dave Liang of the Shanghai Restoration Project, made to benefit survivors thru Sichuan Quake Relief: www.afterquakemusic.com Special Thanks to -Bela Fleck -Julia Green Elementary School: Mrs. Caitlin Harris (Mandarin Chinese Teacher), Mrs. Sue Biggers, Mrs. Lauryn Moody, Principal Dr. Eileen Wills & Mr. Lance Foreman, Mrs. Bigger's 2nd grade class and all the students' parents -Charlie Rose -Sichuan Quake Relief (Peter Goff, Li Jiehao, Yuan Yuan, David Hunt, Mark Allen) -The Blue Room, Nashville, TN -Stephanie Ching -Shuimuo Middle School, Emeishan, China -Amanda Kowalski & Luke Price -AC Entertainment: Ashley, Carissa, Neeley -Our dear family, friends and fellow earthlings for making it all worthwhile

Silk Road Tour - Sala - Abigail Washburn & The Village

04:11
Sala is a Tibetan and Qiang folk song that traditionally accompanies a dance around a fire. This video features performances from Xi'ning, Yinchuan, Lanzhou, Hohot and Guangzhou, all stops on the 2011 Silk Road Tour. One of the most exciting moments of the tour happened in an unlikely place, the vocational High School of Xi'ning, Qinghai Province. It was clear immediately that the majority of the students were Tibetan and the fact that I was speaking mandarin Chinese through most of the show didn't mean that everyone was understanding what I was saying... in fact I wasn't sure how much the kids were even enjoying the show because their reaction was much cooler and more pensive than the other audiences we had played for. Our last performance of the hour long show was 'Sala,' a song I learned from children in the 2008 earthquake disaster zone. As soon as we began singing kids jumped out of their seats and began singing along, waving their arms, and within seconds almost 30 young women had taken to the stage and started doing the 'fire dance' that goes with this famous Tibetan folk song. It was an exhilarating moment, but every time we got to perform it with local collaborators for an audience and feel and hear them singing along it was totally inspiring. In this video you'll see moments from the vocational school as well as moments in theaters in Lanzhou, Yinchuan and Hohhot. You'll see instruments like the pipa, erhu, guzheng, chinese hammered dulcimer & dizi. 'Sala' continually reminds me of my time in Sichuan during the earthquake recovery and how music and the interconnectedness of humanity can heal and inspire. http://abigailwashburn.com Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF Tour Map: ‪http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬ Shot & Edited by Luke Mines

Silk Road Tour 10 - Turpan - Abigail Washburn & The Village

02:31
This episode features Abigail Washburn and the Village collaborating with the Uyghur musical ensemble at Xinjiang Normal University in Urumqi. It also features footage from a trip the band took to the Silk road oasis of Turpan, famous for its raisins and elaborate underground irrigation system. The Uyghurs are a Muslim minority in far western China who speak a Turkic language related to the language of Uzbekistan. At Xinjiang Normal University we were treated to a number of cool Uyghur musical and dance performances and an incredible meal of pulled noodles with a choice of about 20 different sauces to top them with. After that the Village collaborated with the musical ensemble in front of a boisterous crowd of students and faculty. The preceding day we had taken a trip to Turpan, a couple hours outside of Urumqi. We visited the Karez, the underground canals that water this oasis in the middle of a harsh desert with water that flows down from the Tianshan mountain range. We then had a lunch of about 10 varieties of mutton. Mutton is big in Uyghurland. After that we visited the ruins of an ancient city which looked like the edge of the world. At one point on the Turpan trip our bus driver purchased two roasted goats pulled from the trunk of a friend's car and threw them in the luggage compartment of our mini-bus. It made for a gamey ride, but seemed very fitting for a Silk Road oasis town. http://abigailwashburn.com Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF Tour Map: ‪http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬ Shot & Edited by Luke Mines

Silk Road Tour 4 - Xi'an - Abigail Washburn & The Village

02:22
After Hohhot and Yinchuan, China's ancient capital of Xi'an 西安 felt like a cosmopolitan metropolis. The ancient city wall, shadow puppets and terra cotta warriors seemed out of a movie set. There was also a good gig at the Xi'an conservatory of music where Abby sang old favorite Kangding Qingge with some beautiful student musicians. After that gig we had the most incredible dumpling feast any of us could imagine, basket after basket. Xi'an was the site of the ancient capital of Chang An 长安, "everlasting peace." In the Tang dynasty (618—907) it was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, as art, goods and religion flowed across the Silk Road. Chang An housed Arab, Turkish, Persian, Jewish and Christian traders, and Central Asian musical instruments were played in the imperial court. The current city walls date from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and one day at sunset the Village decided to have a little jam on the wall as locals and tourists enjoyed the show. The first night in town we stumbled into a shadow puppet theater on the old Muslim street that runs down from the old Drum Tower 鼓楼. Xi'an and it's surrounding province of Shaanxi have traditionally had strong traditions of shadow puppetry, though like many folk traditions, it has weakened in the wake of the cultural revolution and modernization. But the old puppeteer at this tiny theater had us cracking up with a tale of forbidden love. ‪http://abigailwashburn.com‬ Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: ‪http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF‬ Tour Map: ‪http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬ Shot & Edited by Luke Mines

We met this Tibetan kid at the high school gig we played in Xi'ning. He wandered in with a mandolin, speaking only Tibetan and sang us a couple of beautiful folk songs, including this one here. Xi'ning is in Qinghai province, on the Tibetan plateau adjacent to Tibet and has many Tibetans, who are also dispersed throughout Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces throughout the foothills of the Tibetan plateau. ‪http://abigailwashburn.com‬ Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: ‪http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF Tour Map: http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬

Silk Road Tour 5 - Lanzhou - Abigail Washburn & The Village

03:08
Lanzhou is known across China for it's hand-pulled beef noodles or niu rou la main 牛肉拉面. And we were treated to several feasts of beef noodles in Lanzhou. We also had a great session with some music students at one of the local universities in Lanzhou. Performing for and with students was one of the funnest parts of the tour. Students in these cities brought unbelievable amounts of enthusiasm to the shows. Surprisingly, when we arrived, after performing on some classical Chinese instruments, the choir came out and performed "Amazing Grace". So in turn we taught them another old spiritual song, "Keys to the Kingdom". ‪http://abigailwashburn.com‬ Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: ‪http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF‬ Tour Map: ‪http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬ Shot & Edited by Luke Mines

Silk Road Tour 2 - Mongolian Dance - Abigail Washburn & The Village

01:32
After the show in Hohhot, a friend of the Mongolian musicians we collaborated with was hanging out in the dressing room. With the slightest of proddings she burst into a Mongolian folk dance accompanied by horse head fiddle. It was one of those sublime, unexpected moments that happens on a tour like this and we were all mesmerized by this young lady's graceful moves. It also happened that the head of public diplomacy from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, Tom Skipper, was hanging out in the dressing room that night and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. It was perhaps a measure of thanks to the U.S. Embassy for sponsoring this Silk Road tour. http://abigailwashburn.com Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF Tour Map: ‪http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬ Shot & Edited by Luke Mines

Silk Road Tour 3 - Yinchuan - Abigail Washburn & The Village

03:05
On this second stop of the Silk Road Tour, we arrive in the Yellow River town of Yinchuan in Ningxia, home province of the Hui Muslims. Local er hu 二胡 virtuoso Quan Lei joins us in a rendition of "Little Birdie" and plays "Sai Ma" 赛马, the crowd-pleasing "Horse Race" song. The Hui people are a Mandarin speaking group of Muslims, descended from Persian, Arab and Turkish Silk Road traders who married local women many generations ago. We were taken to a massive, recently-built museum of Hui history which looked kind of like the Taj Mahal and seemed to have no visitors apart from our group. Ah the joys of the institutional itinerary. But we managed to have a good time in this weird monument and made our flight to Xi'an with only a couple minutes to spare. ‪http://abigailwashburn.com‬ Full Silk Road Tour Playlist: ‪http://www.youtube.com/user/AbigailWashburn#grid/user/8A4BE13075AAFBDF Tour Map: ‪http://g.co/maps/dnh73‬ Shot & Edited by Luke Mines‬

The Ballad of Treason - Shadow Puppet Version

03:33
"The Ballad of Treason" from Abigail Washburn's "City of Refuge" album is full of beautiful imagery. Abby decided to blend a Shadow Puppet show with the lyrical imagery from the song when she stumbled upon a shadow puppet theater in the ancient Muslim quarter of Xi'an, China in the midst of a Silk Road Tour with her band the Village. Working with Master Feng, a shadow puppeteer who had traveled the Chinese countryside for decades, and the rest of the Qin Zhi Yun troupe in their small theater, Abby and the Village quickly put together a shadow puppet show to accompany the "Ballad of Treason". This was mixed with an impromptu sunset performance atop Xi'an's Ming Dynasty city wall. Special thanks to the Qin Zhi Yun Folk Opera Group of Xi'an and the U.S. Embassy Beijing. Musicians appearing in the video are Abigail Washburn, Kai Welch, Jamie Dick, Jared Engel and Ross Holmes. Directed, Shot and Edited by Luke Mines Additional Camera by Keith Lommel PA Cain Hogshed
