Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop All you need is a high quality edible organic broccoli seeds for sprouting & sterile mason jar! EASY! **Always use high quality organic sprouting seeds and do not use any kind of manure to grow microgreens or other tray sprouts that require a soil medium.** ONLY USE Certified organic sprouting seeds for human consumption! -WARNING**Like any fresh produce that is consumed raw or lightly cooked, sprouts carry a risk of foodborne illness. So grow & eat sprouts at your own risk. ** Growing your own sprouts or microgreens is so easy, anyone can do it, & I mean anyone!! And not only are sprouts delicious, they are super healthy for you, especially broccoli sprouts!! ------------- *Directions: How to grow your own sprouts 1. Add 2 TBS of broccoli sprouting seeds(Certified organic sprouting seeds for human consumption) to a quart jar. 2. Cover with a few inches of filtered water and cap with the sprouting lid or screen. 3. Store in a warm, dark place overnight. I used my kitchen cabinet. 4. The next morning, drain the liquid off and rinse with fresh water. Be sure to drain all the water off. 5. Repeat this 2-4 times a day. Continue to store your seeds in a warm, dark place. 6. Around day 5 or 6, the sprouts will be an inch or so long and have yellow leaves. Now you can move the sprouts out into the light. 7. Continue to rinse them 2-4 times a day until the leaves are dark green. Now they are ready to eat 8. This whole process will take about 5-8 days. 9. Once they are ready, replace the sprouting lid with a standard mason jar lid and store in the refrigerator. 10. Serve on top of salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, etc Instructions from: http://bit.ly/2m8d32B Recommend disinfecting your seeds prior to sprouting, bc if not properly disinfected, all seeds have the possibility of carrying foodborne pathogens. It's recommended that you disinfect the outside of your seeds and your sprouting container prior to sprouting. There are many methods of seed preparation ranging from rinsing with hot water or soaking in hot hydrogen peroxide, to washing with vinegar, a diluted bleach solution, or grapefruit seed extract. The current recommendation to use in the home is by heating for 5 minutes in a solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide at 140F. It is important to maintain this temperature using a clean, accurate cooking thermometer. Exceeding this temperature may kill seeds resulting in poor germination. Remove seed and rinse under running room temperature water for 1 min. What We Learned Our 1st Year on the Farm (I CAN)

03:37
The Farm Life! Or 1st year living on our farm & homestead, we realized one thing...I CAN! Living on a farm can be hard & tough, but don't give up, & do what you CAN'T! Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop Contact Us: Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36701 [email protected] When I was asked to be a part of this collaboration(What we learned our 1st year Homesteading), by the Ozark Off Grid Family, I was just shocked...bc I am very new to the YouTube world, & honestly, I have not been making YouTube videos very long...so it was such a great honor to be asked...thanks guys!! So when I was thinking about what I wanted to do in this homestead collaboration video(What We Learned Our 1st Year Homesteading), I just kept thinking about all the times that I would doubt myself & think I CAN'T do something....bc it happens a lot..fear & doubt are my biggest hurdle & I have to battle them all the time. I can't do this or I can't do that, bc I am not a carpenter, or a farmer, or a gardener, etc.....why don't you just live just like everyone else, bc you CAN'T be a farmer or homesteader...so when that fear & doubt set in, I have to knock it down & remind myself that, I CAN! I can do anything I want to do & no one or nothing can stop me! So the main thing I wanted to share about our 1st year homesteading is that YOU CAN...You can do it...you can do anything you want to do & do not be afraid of trying! YOU CAN! & do not let anyone , including yourself that you can't...always Do what you can't! If you are a new homesteader or a new farmer, or thinking about trying this lifestyle, or honestly, if want to try to do anything different in your life...DO IT, bc YOU CAN! You can homestead...doesn't matter if it's urban homesteading, modern homesteading, off grid homestead, homestead farm or backyard homesteading...It does not matter the size of your place or the size of your homestead or soon-to-be homestead....you CAN do it! If you can dream, you CAN do it! Life is too short to give up on a dream! Life's a dance & you gotta keep dancing! 3 Natural Organic Dewormers & Immune Boosters for your Livestock | Chickens, Poultry, Pigs, Goats

04:48
Here are 3 Natural & Organic Wormers & Immune Boosters we Use on our Livestock here on the Homestead! (Holistic dewormer & immune booster) Natural Dewormer | Holistic Dewormer: 1. Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) 2. Pumpkins & Pumpkin Seeds 3. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) *Purchase Food Grade DE - Diatomaceous Earth http://amzn.to/2qB29DT ----------------------------------- -Link To Delaware St. University Research on Pumpkins as a dewormer: http://www.desu.edu/sites/default/files/Pumpkin%20Seeds-Worms_DJO.pdf -Link To Benefits Of Diatomaceous Earth, as a natural womer: https://poultrykeeper.com/health-suppliments/diatomaceous-earth/ -Link to the health benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for your livestock & poultry: https://poultrykeeper.com/health-suppliments/apple-cider-vinegar/ **Disclaimer: I am not a Scientist or a Veterinarian, so always check your Vet first. This is just what we do on our farm & homestead...always use your best judgement for your homestead.** We try to raise our livestock animals(chickens, ducks, geese, peacocks, pigs) as natural & as organic as we can. We try to avoid any chemical or antibiotics, as much as we can, so this is what we do around on our little farm & homestead. -I add Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE), to all my feeds...1 lb per 50 lbs of feed. I also spread Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) around my coops & dust bath spots & also I will dust my chickens with Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) from time to time as well...because it will kill mites & lice! -Whenever I can get pumpkins, I get them...we ask schools, other farms, all our friends & family, churches, & grocery stores, to call us whenever they have leftover pumpkins from the holidays..you will be surprised as to how many pumpkins you can find...for FREE! Pumpkins or the pumpkin seeds have a natural amino acid that paralyzes worms & parasites, & so anytime you can feed your livestock, chickens, goats, pigs, & poultry pumpkins...do it, bc it is a great natural dewormer. Also not only are pumpkins & pumpkin seeds a great dewormer, they ar slap full of Vitamins, mainly A, E, & C...plus it is full of antioxidants & beta carotene!! -I add Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to all my waterers just about every day, along with waterers that do not have any apple cider vinegar, so the animals can have both fresh water, with or without apple cider vinegar. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV), is great for the chickens immune system & their digestive system. It is a natural & organic antibiotic & antiseptic. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is a germ killer, & parasites & germs just do not like Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Also Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is just slap full of Vitamins, minerals & trace elements! I hope this helps the next time you are worming your livestock or worming your chickens or worming your pigs! ***If you like our YouTube Video on Natural& Holistic Dewormers, don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT, & SUBSCRIBE *** ********************************************************* We are a small family farm & homestead located in central Alabama....and this is our story! #KnowYourFarmer #KnowYourFood ***All artwork in this video is by my amazing 6 yr old daughter!*** Don't Forget To SUBSCRIBE: http://tinyurl.com/j4o28l5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHECK OUT Our Other Social Media Sites: -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CogHillFarm -Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/CogHillFarms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coghillfarm/ -Pintrest: https://www.pinterest.com/coghillfarms/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How To Trellis Blackberries! The EASY Primocane suppression Method for your Homestead

05:44
Here is our YouTube Video on how we trellis blackberries on our homestead! We use primocane suppression method, to trellis blackberry bushes & this is how it works! Late summer is the time to start training your blackberries for next year. We use the 2 cane suppression/Primocane suppression method when it comes to trellising blackberries. We cut out all the old canes that produced blackberries that year....and find 2 of the best looking blackberry canes, & train them to grow on a fence or trellis. This method focuses all the energy of the blackberry into just those 2 canes, which produces a heavy yield, of very large, blackberry fruit! The lower trellis/level is around 3 foot high & the 2nd row or the upper level is around 5 foot tall. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Here is a more in depth video by Dr Powell at Petals From The Past in Jemison Alabama: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2-reKF7XVI -Justin Rhodes YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOSGEokQQcdAVFuL_Aq8dlg --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are a small family farm & homestead located in central Alabama....and this is our story! #knowyourfarmer #knowyourfood If you are just beginning a homestead or just starting out, I hope these homesteading videos & our homestead channel are helpful! **All art work in this video is by my amazing 6 yr old daughter! Raising American Guinea Hogs on our Family Farm & Homestead!! Heritage Breed Pigs

05:30
Learn all about the American Guinea Hog In this video! We Are Raising American Guinea Hogs on our Farm & Homestead! Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop And the AGH is a great beginner pig & a great homestead pig as well!! So check out this video on the American Guinea Hog! **Here is a video of our AGH sow having babies/piglets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBD_gD0N9e0 The Guinea hog, also called the pineywoods Guinea, Guinea forest hog, acorn eater, and yard pig, is a breed of domestic pig originating in the United States. Despite its name, the breed is not from the country of Guinea, though the foundation stock is thought to be derived from West Africa. The Guinea hog is a rare breed with a black coat, sturdy body, curly tail and upright ears. The name derives from the origins of the Guinea hog on the Guinea coast of West Africa. The true African Guinea hogs are a large, red breed with upright ears, bristly hair and long tails, suggesting genetic influence of the Nigerian black or Ashanti pig. They were brought to America on slave ships. Around 1804, Thomas Jefferson acquired some of these pigs, which had arrived from Africa via the Canary Isles. The original strain, although basically black, also had a hint of red and were consequently called "red Guineas"; that strain, well known at the beginning of the 19th century, is extinct. Later they were crossed with other breeds, including Appalachian English pigs, Essex pigs, and West African dwarfs. This new breed, the American Guinea hog retained its black color but lost the red tint and is sometimes called a black Guinea. These pigs were popular with subsistence farmers, not only through their ability to forage for themselves, but also because their habit of eating snakes made the farmyard safe for children and livestock. The breed fell out of favor after around 1880, and for a while was in danger of being entirely lost. The red Guinea no longer exists and its exact relationship with the American Guinea and what proportions of other breeds are in its background are not known for certain. However, that there is a relationship is shown by the occasional birth of a reddish pig to the normally bluish-black American Guinea parents. It is suspected that there were a number of distinct American Guineas in the past. In 2005 the American Guinea Hog Association was formed which works to ensure its continued existence. The Guinea hog is also included in Slow Food USA's Ark of Taste, a catalog of heritage foods in danger of extinction.: Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_hog Contact Us: Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36701 [email protected] ---------- **HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT OUR CHANNEL?** -Make a Donation Through PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/CogHillFarm -Bookmark & Shop From The Following Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/?ie=UTF8&tag=cohifa06-20 -------------- Our Other Social Media Sites: -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CogHillFarm -Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/CogHillFarms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coghillfarm/ -Pintrest: https://www.pinterest.com/coghillfarms/ -Steemit: https://steemit.com/@coghill/ ------------- ***Some of Our Fav Resources, Books & Equipment*** -"The Gift of Southern Cooking-Scott Peacock -Edna Lewis": http://amzn.to/2bhZ6bM -Joel Salatin's Book "Pastured Poultry Profit$" http://amzn.to/2qeOQd7 ------------ Welcome To Cog Hill Farm & Homestead: the dancing farmer We are a small family farm & homestead located in Alabama & this is our story #KnowYourFarmer #KnowYourFood #GrowYourOwn If you are just beginning a homestead or just starting out, I hope these homesteading videos & our homestead channel are helpful! & keep dancing! --------- ***Informative LINKS: American Guinea Hog*** -American Guinea Hog Association AGHA: http://guineahogs.org/ -The Livestock Conservancy: http://livestockconservancy.org/ -Mother Earth News: http://tinyurl.com/zonw5lx -Permaculture Voices(Podcast): http://tinyurl.com/nzt35ah AGH | heritage breed pigs Cog Hill Farm

COMPOSTING - How To Compost (SUPER DUPER EASY WAY)

06:19
COMPOSTING 101-In this video I show you the EASIEST Way To Make Compost for your garden! Composting without a compost bin! Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop Contact Us: Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36701 [email protected] Our Website: www.thecoghillfarm.com ---------- Jeff Poppen, The Barefoot Farmer Videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6p5Ff3zt5YZf7NGf0R78C5yTdhe7QZhh In this youtube video I talk about composting & how we compost here on our homestead & farm. The way I make compost is by just placing all my kitchen scraps or chicken manure or goat manure in a pile or by just piling it up in my compost bin, & that is it. I do not turn, I do not wet the pile, all I do is set it & forget it. It will eventually breakdown into great garden compost. Yes, if you did turn your compost pile & kept it moist all the time, it would break down faster, but most of the time, I just do not have time for that....I got things I got to do here on the farm & tending to my compost pile is way down on my homesteading to do list. Another way I compost is by just throwing all my kitchen scraps & old hay & grass clippings & rabbit manure in ,my raised beds after I am finished growing something in them. Once a growing cycle or growing season is finished in a raised bed, I will then start adding all the scraps into it & it will eventually start to breakdown, & by the time it is time for me to plant in them, the soil is ready! So if you are like me, & want to compost, & really just want to compost the easiest way possible, then do like we do here on the farm...just make you a compost pile, whether it be in a bin, or in your garden, & do not worry about the green to brown ratio, or worry about watering it, or worry about your compost's temperature, or if you need to turn the pile...mother nature will take care of it eventually & it will breakdown into rich humus compost. Thanks for watching our video on how to compost & hope you learned something about composting today. Y'all BE GOOD!! How To Make EASY & SIMPLE Homemade Bread! No-Knead Artisan Bread Video

07:54
How To Make EASY & SIMPLE Homemade Bread Video! This homemade bread recipe is sooo easy & simple!! Only 4 ingredients & no kneading & no need for a bread machine!! SUPER EASY!! Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop Great Beginner Bread Recipe!!! When I first found this recipe & tried it, I was like HOLY COW, bc I could not believe I just made delicious homemade bread. In my mind, I thought making bread was hard, & took hours to complete, but boy was I wrong!! This no knead, easy homemade bread recipe was made famous by the legendary baker, Jim Lahey of Sullivan Street Bakery in New York City. -Here is a video the New York Times did with Jim Lahey & his No-Knead Bread: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13Ah9ES2yTU Sullivan Street Bakery: http://www.sullivanstreetbakery.com/ But this is the PERFECT Homestead Bread!!! So simple an no need to knead it! *********** The Recipe I used:(No-knead Homemade Bread) -Ingredients: 3 Cups lukewarm water 1 1/2 TSP of yeast 1 1/2 TSP of salt 6 1/2 cups of unbleached all purpose flour -Directions: 1. Add yeast and salt to the water in a 5-quart bowl or, preferably, in a resealable, lidded container (not airtight) 2. Mix in the flour by gently scooping it up, then leveling the top of the measuring cup with a knife; don’t pat down. Mix with a wooden spoon, a high-capacity food processor with dough attachment, or a heavy-duty stand mixer with dough hook, until uniformly moist. If hand-mixing becomes too difficult, use very wet hands to press it together. Don’t knead! This step is done in a matter of minutes, and yields a wet dough loose enough to conform to the container. 3. Cover loosely. Do not use screw-topped jars, which could explode from trapped gases. Allow the mixture to rise at room temperature until it begins to collapse (or at least flatten on top), approximately two hours, depending on temperature. Longer rising times, up to about five hours, will not harm the result. You can use a portion of the dough any time after this period. Refrigerated wet dough is less sticky and easier to work with than room-temperature dough. We recommend refrigerating the dough at least 2-3 hours before shaping a loaf. And relax! -Baking Bread on Baking Day: 4. Sprinkle the surface of the dough with flour, then cut off a 1-pound (grapefruit-sized) piece with a serrated knife. Hold the mass of dough in your hands and add a little more flour as needed so it won’t stick to your hands. Gently stretch the surface of the dough around to the bottom on four “sides,” rotating the ball a quarter-turn as you go, until the bottom is a collection of four bunched ends. Most of the dusting flour will fall off; it doesn’t need to be incorporated. The bottom of the loaf will flatten out during resting and baking. 5. Let it rest uncovered for about 40 minutes. Depending on the dough’s age, you may see little rise during this period; more rising will occur during baking. 6. Twenty minutes before baking, preheat oven to 450 degrees with a baking stone on the middle rack. Place an empty broiler tray for holding water on another shelf. 7. Dust the top of the loaf liberally with flour, which will allow the slashing, serrated knife to pass without sticking. Slash a 1⁄4-inch-deep cross, scallop or tick-tack-toe pattern into the top. (This helps the bread expand during baking.) 8. Carefully slide the loaf off the pizza peel and onto the baking stone. Quickly but carefully pour about a cup of hot water into the broiler tray and close the oven door to trap the steam. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the crust is browned and firm to the touch. 9. Refrigerate the remaining dough in your lidded (not airtight) container and use it over the next two weeks. American Guinea Hog, How was the Flavor? How Much Yield? PORK RECAP

And we finally got our first one processed & just got it back from the processor. It was a one year old male pig & since it was a heritage breed pig, it took around 1 year to get it up to weight. He weighed 167 pounds, which I was very happy with, bc I actually thought the pig was smaller than that. Since the American Guinea Hog is a small breed of pig. A full size 2 year old boar, male, American Guinea Hog will top out around 300-350lbs in size, & a female will weigh around 200-250lbs. So I was very happy with how this one turned out. Now since we do not have our butcher shop up & going, we had to take the first one to the closest processor, which is about an hour away, & there is at least a 3 month waiting period too, but hopefully this will be the last one we will have to take to a processor, fingers crossed. Now, I am not for sure how much weight in return we got back, bc the processor does not tell you that, & I did not really want to weigh every single package either, but this is the quantity of packages we got from the American Guinea Hog: 12 (6 Pack)-Pork Chops 20 Packages of Suasage 16 Packs of Bacon 2 Large Pork Roast 2 Large Hams(1 halved) 2 Small Packs of Spare Ribs 3 Packs of neck 1 Large Bag of Leaf Lard 1 Pack of Pork Liver And I must say, I really was impressed with how much pork it yielded! Very impressed. i knew that the guinea hog is a small breed of pig, & and anticipated smaller portions of pork. Now the flavor. this was the main thing that I was really curious about, was how did the pork actually taste? We had the pork chops first, while small, they were not as small as I initially thought, but what it may have lacked in size, compared to a typical pork chop, it made up for it in flavor, bc these pork chops were absolutely amazing! The texture, and the tenderness, & how moist the pork chops were just blew me away! The pork literally melts in your mouth, & I am not just saying that either. The pork chops were just as tender as a ribeye steak. Now as for the bacon, it, much like the pork chops, was really good & it too just melted in your mouth, & it has to be bc of all that great fat & lard that is marbled all in the meat. The pork roast was also amazing. Just lots & lots of great flavor. the sausage was good, it was not mind blowing like the pork chops & bacon, but it was really good, & when we cook the hams, I will let everyone know how it turns out as well. But we were really impressed how the pork turned out. We were happy with the yield, & we were happy with the flavor. And absolutely without hesitation, I would recommend the American Guinea Hog to anyone!!! I hope you enjoyed this American Guinea Hog Pork Recap YouTube video, & hope y'all have a wonderful day! ----------- ***Some of Our Fav Resources*** -"The Gift of Southern Cooking-Scott Peacock -Edna Lewis": http://amzn.to/2bhZ6bM -Joel Salatin's Book "Pastured Poultry Profit$" http://amzn.to/2qeOQd7 -"An Introduction to Heritage Breeds" http://amzn.to/2t5ZF2D ------------ Welcome To Cog Hill Farm & Homestead: We are a small family farm & homestead located in Alabama, & this is our story! #KnowYourFarmer #KnowYourFood #GrowYourOwn If you are just beginning a homestead or just starting out, I hope these homesteading videos & our homestead channel are helpful! ------------- Our Other Social Media Sites: -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CogHillFarm -Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/CogHillFarms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coghillfarm/ -Pintrest: https://www.pinterest.com/coghillfarms/ -Steemit: https://steemit.com/@coghill/ raising pigs | raising american guinea hogs | best breed for a small farm | homestead pigs | pig farmer | pig farming | best pig breeds -------------- Music: Dj Quads "This time of the year" Support: https://www.patreon.com/DjQuads Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/aka-dj-quads Instagram https://www.instagram.com/djquads/ Twitter https://twitter.com/DjQuads Thank you Cog Hill Farm - 2017

PEACH JAM - Easy Homemade NO PECTIN Peach Jam Recipe - Preserving Peaches

07:56
PEACH JAM - Peach Preserves -Easy Homemade NO PECTIN Peach Jam Recipe-From Kevin West, Saving The Season ---------CLICK SHOW MORE FOR THE RECIPE & INSTRUCTIONS--------- You can Purchase the book in this video, "Saving the Season: A Cook's Guide to Home Canning, Pickling, & Preserving"-by Kevin West here: http://amzn.to/2wdzAQP ------------ No Pectin Peach Jam Recipe & Instructions: Makes 6, 1/2 pint jars -Ingredients 5 pounds ripe peaches 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 3 1/2 cups sugar -Procedure 1. To peel the peaches, slash a shallow "X" in the pointed end of each fruit. Working with a few at a time, blanch the peaches for 60 to 90 seconds in boiling water, or until the skin loosens. Lift the peaches out of the water using a slotted spoon & set them in a bowl of ice water to cool; remove the skins & pits from the peaches. Slice each peach into quarters, then cut each quarter crosswise into fourths. Mix the peaches with the lemon juice, stir in the sugar,& leave to macerate for 30 minutes. 2. Turn the fruit-sugar mixture into a large preserving pan, & rapidly bring to a full boil. Reduce over high heat to the gel point, 8 to 10 minutes at a full rolling boil, while stirring constantly. Do not stop stirring your peaches during this 10 minutes, bc your peach jam could scorch or burn. If the jam is too chunky for your liking, turn off the heat & stir with a whisk for another minute, to break down the chunks. Ladle the hot jam into six prepared 1/2-pint jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Seal the jars, & process in a boiling-water bath for 10 minutes. - Check the jars to make sure they have sealed properly. The lids shouldn't move up & down when you press in the middle of the lid. If a jar hasn't sealed, you can refrigerate it & go ahead & enjoy! ***DISCLAIMER*** Any canning or food preservation advice given has not been evaluated by the FDA or USDA, you're encouraged to verify all canning & food preservation advice on the USDA food preservation website. Well when we got there, they had peaches on sale for $12 a box! So we grabbed 2 boxes of peaches & decided to make some canned peaches, peach preserves, & some no pectin peach jam. I just love Kevin West's book, Saving The Season, & so I went with his easy peach jam recipe. Bc so far, Kevin's book has yet to fail me thus far. PLOW WARS! The Hoss Plow vs The Earthway Plow (WHO WINS?)

10:21
Which is the best wheel plow? The Hoss plow vs the Earthway plow. In this video I compare the Hoss Wheel Hoe vs the Earthway High Wheel cultivator, & show the differences between the 2 garden push plows & which wheelie plow performs the better of the 2 plows in my garden. -Hoss Tools Website: http://shrsl.com/11a6g -Hoss Tools YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/HossGardeningTools -Earthway Garden Tools YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/earthwayproducts Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop --------------- Last week I made a garden video of me using my Earthway high wheel cultivator, & how much I loved using it in my garden. (Watch that video here: https://youtu.be/lFco0ihuxIs ) Well shortly after that video, the good folks over at Hoss tools reached out to me bc they loved that wheelie plow video I made & they also were so confident that I would love their wheel plow better that they sent me one in the mail to try out & see if I indeed did like the performance of the hoss wheel hoe vs the earthway high wheel cultivator or not. So that is what this youtube video is all about. A full comprehensive review of the Hoss Plow vs the Eathway plow & may the best plow win!! I will say right off the bat, the hoss plow is def built stronger. The hoss plow has thicker metal & just is a more solid plow than the earthway plow. Also the other main thing that is that the hoss wheel hoe just comes with so many different attachments: double or single plow, 6" or 12" hoe, single or dual garden sweeps, garden disc, dibble wheel, irrigation tape installer, a seeder attachment, & cultivator. The earthway only has the farrow maker, the 5" hoe, single plow & the cultivator. Then came the actual testing of the garden plows. And it did not take long to see that the hoss wheel plow is just a for more superior product. It is just more stable, & the main thing is it just seems to have more power....it just utilizes your own power & energy more efficiently than the earthway cultivator did. No matter which attachment I used. At the end of the day, it all boils down to is what can you fit in your budget. I have been using the earthway high wheel push plow now for going on 5 years, & it has always did what I asked it to do, but since using the hoss wheel plow, I do not think I would go back. Thanks for watching this plow comparison video & hope you enjoyed it & hopefully you learned something about these 2 wonderful push plows...have the BEST day ever! Y'all be good! How We GIVE Our Chicks a Kickstart! MAGIC WATER - (The Farm Life)

05:10
Magic Water Recipe: (Chick Immune Booster - Makes 1 Gal) 1 Gallon of Warm Water 1/2 Cup of Honey (Preferably Raw) 2 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar (Preferably Raw & Organic) 2 Cloves of Crushed Garlic (Preferably Organic) Mix all of the ingredients together & pour into waterers & leave in the chick brooder or chicken coop for 1 to 2 days, & remove & replace with fresh clean water. (We make this for 75-100 Broiler chicks) --------------------- Not for sure when we exactly started using this great immune booster & electrolyte replenisher for our new chicks or poults, but ever since we did, we have seen a tremendous difference in the health of our meat chickens. I like to call it gatorade for chickens & chicks. Packed full of vitamins, it really gives your incoming chicks a great jumpstart. We only give it to our chicks for 1 to 2 days & that is it, & then we take it all out, if any is left, & replace it with fresh clean water with a touch of raw & organic apple cider vinegar, & will just continue with just plain water & ACV for the rest of the time...up until processing time. And this does not have to be for strictly meat chicks & chickens, you could use this for any poultry. -------------------- -Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop ✅Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36702 [email protected] ✅Website: https://www.thecoghillfarm.com ------------- ❓ *HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT OUR CHANNEL?* -Bookmark & Shop From The Following Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/?ie=UTF8&tag=cohifa06-20 ------------ My Gear/Equipment: 👒 Garden Hat(Kavu): https://amzn.to/2MqUP9J 🐔 Featherman Plucker: https://amzn.to/2QlRZIX 🐔 Featherman Scalder: https://amzn.to/2UwsGCh 🐔 Featherman Roto-Dunker: https://amzn.to/2rwOGQd 🐔 Processing Cones: https://amzn.to/2L96JVJ 🌻 Wheelie Plow(Hoss Tools): http://shrsl.com/11a6g 🌞 Solar Power Fence Charger: https://store13733701.ecwid.com/ And use PROMO CODE: 05DF4J34AV1G to get $15 off any of their solar power units! 📷 Camera (Canon SL2): https://amzn.to/2UA8gYS 📷 Lens(Canon 10-18mm): https://amzn.to/2UxeHft 📷 GoPro(Hero Session): https://amzn.to/2L8Aups 💻 HP Notebook(15.6 Laptop): https://amzn.to/2UzcNLa ❤ Fav Cookbook: -"The Gift of Southern Cooking" Scott Peacock & Edna Lewis: http://amzn.to/2bhZ6bM (Please note that some of the links above are affiliate links, & at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you decide to make a purchase after clicking through the link) ✅Connect With Us: -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CogHillFarm -Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/CogHillFarms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coghillfarm/ -------------- 🎧Podcast is uploaded WEEKLY: -Spotify: https://goo.gl/vLfJaS -iTunes: https://goo.gl/mPcKed -Podbean: https://coghillfarm.podbean.com/ ------------- 🎵Dancing Farmer Music-Spotify Playlist: https://goo.gl/xY3gS6 --------------- Welcome To Cog Hill Farm & Homestead: Home of The Dancing Farmer & Peaches The Potbelly Pig!! 🐷 We are a small family farm located in Alabama, & this is our story! #familyfarm #farmlife #farm #smallfarm #farmliving #farmer #farmstead If you are just beginning a homestead or just starting out, I hope these homesteading videos & our homestead channel are helpful to you & your Family! Why your Chickens STOPPED Laying Eggs This Autumn: Causes

04:31
Why have my chickens stopped laying eggs?? During this time of year I get asked, "Why have my chickens quit laying eggs on my homestead?? For beginners, you may ask , "why have my chickens quit laying eggs" Well it's just that time of year...your chickens quit laying eggs because the days are shorter & they need at least around 14 hours of sunlight to lay eggs. They also will stop laying eggs because this time of year, they will start moulting and losing their feathers, which stresses them out, and put a kink in their egg production. It's also cold, the cooler weather will cause to to slow down on egg laying. And it's the end of their laying cycle...chickens slow down or stop laying eggs near the end of their egg laying cycle, but they will start back laying eggs in full force come spring!! So no need to fret, because your chickens gave stop laying eggs or have slowed down from laying eggs...they will start back laying soon. If you are a beginning homestead or just starting a homestead or just started raising chickens, i hope this chicken egg youtube video was helpful for you and your new homestead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- **Check this helpful Video out: How TO Choose the BEST Chicken Breed: https://youtu.be/tlQQKiCdCCQ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- We are a small family farm & homestead located in central Alabama....and this is our story! #KnowYourFarmer #KnowYourFood ***All artwork in this video is by my amazing 6 yr old daughter!*** Don't Forget To SUBSCRIBE: http://tinyurl.com/j4o28l5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHECK OUT Our Other Social Media Sites: -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CogHillFarm -Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/CogHillFarms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coghillfarm/ -Pintrest: https://www.pinterest.com/coghillfarms/ best egg layers | chicken that lays the best eggs | egg laying breeds | heritage breed chickens | eggs in winter | eggs in autumn | joel salatin

What is a Livestock Guardian Dog & What is not a LGD.- Collaboration -With Peaches

06:34
In this video I discuss livestock guardian dogs & how great pyrenees protects our farm & homestead**CLICK SHOW MORE*** -Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop Cog Hill's What is a Livestock Guardian Dog & what is not a LGD...with a special guest appearance from Peaches!! ---------- We own 2 livestock guardian dogs. We have 2 great pyrenees, LuLu & Bear...and they are wonderful livestock guardians. As a matter of fact, I do not know of any animal we have lost from any predator, like coons, skunks, fox, possums, etc...the only predator issue we have are hawks. They are hands down one of the best alert dogs you can have on your farm or homestead. Our male great pyrenees, Bear, is nothing but a giant teddy bear, except when something strange steps onto our property...now LuLu, our female pyrenees, she is just an ornery mean old lady, but she is great at what she does. And that is guarding our livestock, which includes, chickens, ducks, goats, geese, peacocks, & pigs. The only downside, IMO, to owning a great pyrenees as a livestock guardian dog, is that they are pretty much are nocturnal & bark all night long. Which we have gotten use to, the barking no longer bothers us anymore. And since we are in the southeast, the heat & humidity is a little tough on them bc of their super thick coat, & we elect to have them groomed so they do not overheat. But if you want an a great LGD, please check out the Great pyrenees to be your livestock guardian. Also check the Pyrenees rescue sites, bc there are always guardian dogs looking for that forever home or farm there. They truly are a wonderful breed, but please do your research on the great pyrenees & other livestock guardians before you make that purchase, to make sure that is exactly what you are looking for, for your farm or homestead..one of the best protection dogs & one of the best watch dogs you can have on your farm or homestead. Which Taste Better?? Red Ranger vs Cornish Cross Chicken

11:02
Which chicken taste better? The Red Ranger or the Cornish X? Is the Red Ranger Worth it & a better chicken than the Cornish X? Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop In this video I go over our finally conclusion, does the Red Ranger taste way better than the Cornish X & if so, is it worth the extra money to raise the red ranger chicken over the cornish cross chicken? If you missed any part of the Red Ranger Vs the Cornish Cross meat chicken series, here is the entire meat bird playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6p5Ff3zt5YaAhk_3hayRQmq66UmfwML6 The day has arrived! We are finally going to see if the red ranger is more flavorful than the cornish cross, & if it is actually worth the extra money! I decided to just do a simple roast chicken, & not fancy. No brine, not sauces, no marinades. Just a simple roast chicken, that's it. I had decided to put both chickens, side by side, in a large roasting pan, coat them in butter, salt & pepper, & sprinkle just a little thyme over the chickens. Then we stuffed the cavity with onions & fresh rosemary. Preheated the oven to 425, and once it got up to temp, placed the 2 chickens in the oven & set the timer. Typically, a 4lb chicken takes around 60 minutes, but always check the temp with a meat thermometer, . Chicken, at it's thickest portion, should be at least 165 degrees fahrenheit. The family sat down for dinner, & then the tasting began. My daughter, spoke up & said she liked the red ranger better, & that it tasted more like dark meat. My wife also said that she could tell the difference in the taste and that she liked the red ranger better as well. And the same with myself. There was definitely a difference in the taste & the red ranger did indeed taste better than the cornish x. The red ranger's flavor had a little bit more of a nutty flavor or a buttery flavor, than the cornish rock did. The red ranger also had a fatter skin, and as you can see in the video, the red ranger's skin browned up nicely & was more crispier than the cornish cross chicken. Also, my dear friend, James BEard Award winning chef, Scott Peacock, had already had one of our red rangers before we did, & he liked them a good bit more than the cornish. He loved the fatter skin of the red ranger vs the cornish x. The Cog Hill Farm final conclusion is this.....we loved the flavor of the red ranger vs the cornish cross, but the downside is the red ranger chicken is going to cost you a good bit more to raise vs the cornish x chicken. The Chicken Math! The red ranger chicks are on avg $1 per bird more, & their feed conversion ratio is higher as well. Meaning it takes more feed to put on weight on the red ranger vs the cornish cross. And they took 4 weeks longer than the cornish to get to a good size. And IMO, depending on your market area, the red ranger chicken might be too hard to make a decent profit off of, vs the cornish cross chicken. Not to say you could not make a profit swelling red ranger chickens, bc not all markets are the same, but def in our area market, the red ranger would be a hard sell. Now that being said....we are going to raise the red rangers for ourselves as our homestead meat chicken, & also raise them to any locals that may be willing to pay the extra money for them. So my very final conclusion is this, the red ranger is a great backyard chicken or homestead chicken & the cornish cross is the better farm chicken or profit chicken. FREE Pig & Chicken Feed-How To SAVE Major Money On Your Feed Bill!!

05:58
In this episode of Tip's Tips, we are going to show you how we save lots of money on our feed cost on our farm! Homesteading Money Saving Tips Collab w/Rain Country Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop Like most homesteads or small family farms, we are always trying to figure out how to save money, & we have found ways how to cut our feed cost here on the homestead by doing 2 things. Those money saving things are getting old produce from markets & other farmers, & getting old bread from our local bread store or bakery. The 1st way we are saving money on our feed bill, is by getting old produce and old vegetables from the local markets, local small farms & the farmers market. Some days we get a lot, & we can stretch it over a week ro so, & then some days we will get a small haul of old produce & we will give it to our chickens & pigs that day, but every little bit helps, & it is free food, & that helps big time on our feed bill every month! And as y'all know, living on a homestead or a small family farm, every little bit of money that you can save, is always a good thing! The other way we are saving money on our feed bill is with old bread. We have a local bread store & they will sell us their old bor outdated bread for only $5 for these huge bags of old expired bread & other bakery treats. Bread is really great in the colder months too bc it does help your chickens put on a little more fat & will help them retain heat in those colder months! Another thing about working with a bakery or a market, is that if you build that relationship with them, you could get your foot in the door with your own goods & farm products. Like selling eggs to the bakery or selling your lettuce or greens to the markets or maybe joining another farm that is growing or raising something you are not, & y'all team up to offer your products as a package deal to the public or markets....it could def give you more opportunities out there. I plan to make this new series called Tip's Tips, with our adorable & super crazy & silly goat, Tip, once a month to share some homesteading tips that might could help someone out there, so please stay tuned for more episodes of Tip's Tips!! *This was part of How To Save Money On Your Homestead Collaboration headed up by our great friend Rain Country, so please go check out their channel & go check out the other channels in this collab below!! HOW TO: Broiler Shrink Bags - Poultry Heat Shrink Bags

So in this episode, we show you how we bag our meat chickens using poultry shrink bags...which looks professional, it also protects the chickens from freezer burn & gives you a surface to place your labels on as well. 1. Get you water to around 180 degrees. We have learned in the past shrink wrapping the chickens, that if the water is not hot enough, then the poultry bags will not shrink properly. 2. There are 2 ways to release the air from the shrink bags, you can either place a straw through the top or you can poke a small hole on the front of the shrink bag, & place your label over the hole. 3.You very slowly dip the bagged chicken in the water for just a few seconds, bc you do not want to cook the chicken. And if your water is the proper temp, then the bags will shrink in seconds. 4.Trim the excess shrink bagging and the zip tie off. 5.Wipe down the bagged chicken 6.Find your hole and place your label over & that is it. This is one of the most effective ways to freeze chicken. I hope you enjoyed this brief how to use poultry shrink bags & learned how we bag our whole pastured raised chickens here on our farm. ----------------------- ***Some of Our Fav Resources, Books & Equipment*** -"The Gift of Southern Cooking-Scott Peacock -Edna Lewis": http://amzn.to/2bhZ6bM -Joel Salatin's Book "Pastured Poultry Profit$" http://amzn.to/2qeOQd7 -"Epic Tomatoes: How to Select & Grow the Best Varieties of All Time" http://amzn.to/2swllI2 -"Saving the Season: A Cook's Guide to Home Canning, Pickling, and Preserving" -Kevin West http://amzn.to/2tgzt8o -"An Introduction to Heritage Breeds" http://amzn.to/2t5ZF2D -"Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds" http://amzn.to/2rkLBku -Bell-Matic Automatic Poultry Waterer we use: http://amzn.to/2pEU1Fn ----------------------------- Welcome To Cog Hill Farm & Homestead: We are a small family farm & homestead located in Alabama....and this is our story! #KnowYourFarmer #KnowYourFood #GrowYourOwn If you are just beginning a homestead or just starting out, I hope these homesteading videos & our homestead channel are helpful! THE ULTIMATE DIY GOAT HOUSE!!! Well, it's ultimate to us!

10:54
The ULTIMATE DIY Goat House or Shelter!! P --Click "Show More" for more info about this Video-- Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop Well, it is an ultimate DIY Goat House to us! As y'all know, we have our crazy but cute, baby Nigerian dwarf buckling, named Tip, & Tip's buddy will be here this weekend!! She is also a baby Nigerian dwarf goat kid, & once she gets old enough, she will be the official Cog Hill Homestead milk goat! We will be getting her from our good friends at Strong Family Farm, https://www.facebook.com/Strong-Family-Farm-727007900732810 , & she has really great bloodlines bc her mom is a champion nigerian dwarf doe from one of, if not the best, nigerian dwarf breeder in the entire the country, at Oldesouth Farm, http://www.oldesouth.citymax.com/home.html But since she will be here SOON, & Tip is already staying up at our house...which means we cannot have 2 goats living in our house!! So I jumped on the new DIY goat house / goat shelter! Plus Tip is already growing like a weed & he will be moved to the goat pen as soon as the new baby goat kid arrives. So We Need That Goat House! So this is my DIY Goat House we made. My initial plan was to build an actual goat barn, & milk the goats in there, but after sitting down & thinking about it, I actually can use our current barn, & just rearrange it to make it more efficient & more milk goat friendly Plus the new goat pen is only 20 feet from our barn...so there should not be any issues there. And we already have power, water, & 2 refrigerators in the barn, so we can put all the milk in there, or until it the goat milk is ready to be used. So the current barn will be perfect for milking goats! Our ultimate diy goat shelter will be 8x8 & 6ft tall. The goat house will have only 3 sides, leaving the front of the goat shelter open, so the goats can go inside and get out of the weather. I also added a front porch area on the goat house, where they can get in the shade if the goats need too, plus I can put their goat feed, grains, & hay under there & it also can stay out of the weather. Plus the front porch area of the goat shelter, will have a deep bed of rocks in there, so when they go in & out of the goat house, it will help with their hooves. I still like getting the roof on the goat house, & possibly adding lights to the goat house as well, & that will be part 2 of this DIY project. So stay tuned for part 2 of the DIY Ultimate Goat House youtube video! I hope y'all enjoyed this youtube video, The ULTIMATE Goat House, & hope it might have been helpful or may have gave you some goat housing or goat shelter ideas for your homestead or hobby farm. And y'all check back for part 2 of the DIY ULTIMATE Goat House, & I hope y'all have a wonderful day & we will catch y'all on the next one!! ------- Our Other Nigerian Dwarf Goat Videos: "We're Getting Milk Goats on the homestead" https://youtu.be/WT8xv6sRQQo "We Got a Goat on the Homestead:" https://youtu.be/MF0pTP1zH-Y "This is a GOAT Living In Your House!" https://youtu.be/E7x1qE1fCUQ ----- GOAT LINKS: Oldesouth Nigerian Goat Farm: website:http://www.oldesouth.citymax.com/home.html Strong Family Farm: https://www.facebook.com/Strong-Family-Farm-727007900732810/ ------ Contact Us: Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36701 [email protected] ---------- **HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT OUR CHANNEL?** -Make a Donation Through PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/CogHillFarm -Bookmark & Shop From The Following Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/?ie=UTF8&tag=cohifa06-20 -------------- Our Other Social Media Sites: -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CogHillFarm -Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/CogHillFarms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coghillfarm/ -Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/coghillfarms/ -Steemit: https://steemit.com/@coghill/ ------ ***Some of Our Fav Resources, Books & Equipment*** -"The Gift of Southern Cooking-Scott Peacock -Edna Lewis": http://amzn.to/2bhZ6bM -Joel Salatin's Book "Pastured Poultry Profit$" http://amzn.to/2qeOQd7 --- Welcome To Cog Hill Farm & Homestead: the dancing farmer We are a small family farm & homestead located in Alabama & this is our story #KnowYourFarmer #KnowYourFood #GrowYourOwn If you are just beginning a homestead or just starting out, I hope these homesteading videos & our homestead channel are helpful! & keep dancing! ------- Music by http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music goat enclosure | goat hut | cheap goat shelter

Now THIS Is How You SHELL Peas!! (Antique Pea Sheller) - The Farm Life

05:13
In Today's Family Farm Vlog we are harvesting the pinkeye purple hull peas & the shelling them with my grandfather's 75 year old, homemade pea sheller! --HOSS TOOLS Link: http://shrsl.com/11a6g -My Garden Hat I wear made by Kavu: https://amzn.to/2MqUP9J -Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop Contact Us: Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36701 [email protected] -Our Website: https://www.thecoghillfarm.com ---------- In today's farm vlog, we are harvesting the pinkeye purple hull peas we planted a couple months ago. Purple hull peas are by far our favorite vegetable to grow & to eat in the garden. The purple hull pea is a staple in the south & goes best with a fresh onion & hot cornbread! After harvesting the pinkeye purple hulls, we are going to get to use my grandfather's antique pea sheller. This vintage pea sheller makes life so much easier & the way it works is that it has an electric motor that turns a belt, & that turns a pulley, & that turns 2 rollers which the peas go through, & it is just enough pressure to pop the pea out, without smashing them. I love that this was handbuilt for my grandfather 75 years ago, and now it has been passed down to me & my family to use, & I can then pass it down to MaryCarl, our daughter when it is time. FIGS! What To Do With ALL These Figs! (EASY Fig Preserves)

Watch how we gather figs & then make fig Preserves! SUBSCRIBE For More: https://goo.gl/vtizsh Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop -Check Out The Homestead Box: https://www.thehomesteadbox.com Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36701 [email protected] ------ ****Information found on Video is meant to motivate you to make your own health & food preserving decisions based upon your own research. **** Fig Preserve Recipe - by Chef Vivian Howard Ingredient: 2 heaping quarts perfectly ripe figs 1 quart granulated sugar 1 lemon, sliced thin, seeds removed Directions: Wash your figs thoroughly, but treat them with kid hands. Broken figs will cloud the syrup and will not hold up during the cooking process. Lots of folks remove the stem. I do not. I like the way it looks in the finished product. So that’s your call... In a medium bowl, gently toss together the figs, the sugar and the lemon slices. Cover the bowl and nestle it in the fridge for a minimum of 6 hours or up to overnight. When you’re ready to make the preserves, remove the figs from the fridge and transfer everything in the bowl to a heavy bottomed stainless steel or enamel coated cast iron pan. Bring the figs, sugar and lemon up to a boil and reduce it to a simmer. Allow the preserves to cook at a good simmer for up to an hour. Try not to bother them too much, as the more you stir, the more figs you could potentially break. Over the course of an hour, the preserves will take on the color of strong tea and the figs themselves will shrivel, but amazingly hold their shape. For a lot of preserves, it’s important to skim scum from the surface like mad. For these, it doesn’t matter so much. 45 minutes in, check the preserves by dipping a spoon into the syrup, removing it and running your finger along the back of the spoon. If the syrup separates and holds it’s stance briefly, your preserves are done. If the syrup is watery and runs together as soon as your finger is gone, cook the preserves a bit longer. Yield: 4 pints Link to Vivan's Recipe: http://www.pbs.org/food/features/a-chefs-life-season-3-episode-3-gettin-figgy-with-it/ ----------------------------------------------------- ****DISCLAIMER!!!**** Any canning or food preservation advice given has not been evaluated by the FDA or USDA, you're encouraged to verify all canning & food preservation advice on the USDA food preservation website. We are so passionate about chickens & seriously, without the chicken, there is a really good chance that Cog Hill farm never happens! No pigs, no goats, no eggs, no gardens, no youtube channel, nothing! That first batch of bantam chickens we got almost 8 years ago, gave us the confidence to grow & start our homestead! That is the thing about raising chickens, it build up your confidence level, & that allows you to take the next step in your homestead or farm. Chickens 101-chicken information The one thing about raising chickens, you can raise them just about anywhere. You do not need a huge green pasture to raise chickens, or you do not have to free range your chickens. You can raise chickens right in your own backyard. One thing I stress is to use what you have. So if you have a tiny backyard, do not be stressed about that you do not have enough room like a Joel Salatin, to raise chickens. You can raise your own chickens! I mean even if it is a chicken run in your backyard! Backyard chickens are LOTS of FUN! Raising chickens is fun & so satisfying. You name me another animal or pet, that can make you breakfast everyday? Not only do chickens provide you with delicious eggs or meat. They also are excellent pest & bug control. Chickens will eat tons of bugs everyday. Ticks, worms, caterpillars, beetles. Chickens also love to eat weeds & weed seeds, plus they are like having tiny little living garbage disposals on your property. When you have kitchen scraps or you clean out that fridge or freezer, give all that stuff to your chickens instead of throwing it away in the garbage! & then not only you helping the environment by not dumping that stuff in the trash, the chickens will convert all that stuff into to fabulous compost for your garden! So raising backyard chickens is a must & doesn't like chicken eggs? Chickens are such an amazing animal, & I sure hope you will give them a try, bc they truly are the gateway drug to homesteading!! ---- I hope you enjoy this youtube video all about chickens, & chicken breeds, & I hope you learned something about chickens. I also hope you check out all the other chicken 101 videos in this Chicken Mania Collaboration too. There is a ton of info about chickens being shared by all these great Homesteading youtube channels! ----- Our Social Media Sites -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CogHillFarm -Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/CogHillFarms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coghillfarm/ -Pintrest: https://www.pinterest.com/coghillfarms/ how to raise chickens | raising chickens | chicken feed | backyard chickens | chicken run | poultry farming | chicken information | chicken breeds | bantam chicken | keeping chickens | chicken facts | chicken eggs | chickens for beginners | chicken information Music by Nicolai Heidlas Music https://soundcloud.com/nicolai-heidlas Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported— CC BY 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b... We Got a NEW Buck (Let's Talk Goats!) - Nigerian Dwarf Goats

We got a NEW Nigerian Dwarf goat! So Let's Talk Goats! Hit "SHOW MORE" for More Info about our Small Farm & This Vid! -SUBSCRIBE For More: https://goo.gl/vtizsh -Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36701 [email protected] -------------- We got a new nigerian dwarf goat today & it is an intact buck. So why did we decide to get a new buck goat, bc we already have Tip? Well Tip is a wether goat, which means he has been fixed, & so Tip is just a pet goat, who we love dearly, so we decided to get a buck that wasn't fixed yet, bc that way we can breed our on goats to supply our farm with goat milk. And we have so many plans as to what to do with all the goat milk we should get in the near future. One thing we would like to do with the fresh goat milk, is to use it to feed the cornish chickens & also the ducks with. The french have a breed of chicken called the Breese, & it is a very expense chicken, which is sought after by masters chefs in that region, if not the world, but the way farmers feed the Breese in the last 4 weeks is, but pouring goat's milk over crushed corn, & the French claim this adds so much flavor to the chickens., & that is what we want to do here on our farm as well. Not to mention all the things we can use the milk for here on the homestead, like drinking, ice cream, soaps, cheese, etc. And another reason is that we can breed our own goats, & sell the goat kids for a source of income on the farmstead. Nigerian dwarf goats are a very popular goat breed, & also we have Oldesouth's Goat Farm's breed stock here, which one of the top goat breeders in the country, which should help us when it comes selling the kids...once they are weaned & are old enough. ------------------- *Podcast is uploaded Weekly on these Podcast Apps/Locations/Sites:* -Spotify: https://goo.gl/vLfJaS -iTunes: https://goo.gl/mPcKed -Stitcher Radio: https://goo.gl/Ea9Pfu -Podbean: https://coghillfarm.podbean.com/ ------------------- -Our Website: https://www.thecoghillfarm.com -My Garden Hat I wear made by Kavu: https://amzn.to/2MqUP9J -My Fav Gardening Tools & Plows(Hoss Tools): http://shrsl.com/11a6g -My Solar Power Fence Charger: https://store13733701.ecwid.com/ And use PROMO CODE: 05DF4J34AV1G to get $15 off any of their solar power units! ---------- *HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT OUR CHANNEL?* -Bookmark & Shop From The Following Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/?ie=UTF8&tag=cohifa06-20 ------------- Connect With Us: -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CogHillFarm -Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/CogHillFarms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coghillfarm/ -Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/coghillfarms/ -------------- -Dancing Farmer Music-Spotify Playlist: https://goo.gl/xY3gS6 --------------- Our Fav Cookbook: -"The Gift of Southern Cooking-Scott Peacock -Edna Lewis": http://amzn.to/2bhZ6bM ------------- Welcome To Cog Hill Farm & Homestead: the dancing farmer We are a small family farm & homestead located in Alabama, & this is our story! #goats #goat #nigeriandwarfs #goatlife If you are just beginning a homestead or just starting out, I hope these homesteading videos & our homestead channel are helpful! And This collab is all about raising goats & what is our daily goat routine! Well since we are newbies to the dairy goat world, we really did not have much to offer when it comes to milking & raising lots & lots of milk goats, but we do have the perspective of being a really small farm or homestead, that is limited to space & are in the beginning stages of our milk goat operation. We are raising Nigerian Dwarf Goats on our homestead, & the main reason for choosing the Nigerian Dwarf goat is bc of their size. Since we are very limited to space, the Nigerian Dwarf goat fits our situation perfectly! Also the Nigerian Dwarf Goat produce a lot of milk for their size & their milk is very high in butter fat! We have 2 very young Nigerian Dwarf goats, a wether buck named, Tip, & doe named, Lil' Bootsie. We absolutely love them both, but Tip, the buckling, is an absolute hoot, & is nothing more than a pet goat, & gives our doe a companion as well. But raising them from a bottle up until now, has been a great experience for us & our homestead, & we would recommend the Nigerian Dwarf to anyone. I hope you enjoyed this informative Goat YouTube Video, & if you have any goat questions or any goat comments or any goat recommendations, please feel free to comment or ask! They are very similar to cheese! If you have never tried curing egg yolks with salt, you def need to! It is very simple to do, & salt cured egg yolks are very tasty...it tast a lot like parmesan cheese, but a little saltier. Salt cured yolks are great grated on salads or pasta, or on soups & chilis! You could even crumble it on toasted homemade bread or add it to salad dressings. Crumble it on steaks or even with wings...The possibilities are just endless with the salt cured egg yolks! So watch my daughter & I, cure the egg yolks we gathered from our chickens on our homestead & farm. Hope this How To Salt Cure Eggs YouTube Video Was helpful! Don't forget to comment, like & subscribe!! -------------------------------------------- Here is how we salt cure egg yolks: Salt Cured Egg Yolk Recipe: *Ingredients* Makes 4 Servings 1¾ cups kosher salt 1¼ cups sugar 4 large egg yolks Directions: Salt Curing Egg Yolks: Whisk salt and sugar in a medium bowl to combine. Evenly spread out half of salt mixture in an 8x8" glass baking dish. Using the back of a tablespoon, create 4 depressions in salt mixture, spacing evenly. Carefully place an egg yolk in each depression. Gently sprinkle remaining salt mixture over yolks and loosely wrap dish with plastic wrap. Then Chill 4 days. Preheat oven to 150 degrees. Brush salt mixture off each yolk, then carefully rinse under cold water to remove any remaining salt (yolks will be semi-firm, bright, and translucent). Gently pat dry with paper towels. Or you can use your dehydrator & do the same thing..if that is easier for you. Generously coat a wire rack set inside a rimmed baking sheet with nonstick spray; place yolks on rack. Dry out in oven until opaque and texture is like a firm Gruyère cheese or dried apricots, 1½–2 hours. Let cool. (Alternatively, if your oven doesn’t go that low, you can dry out eggs in an unheated oven for 2 days.) Finely grate cured egg yolks over soups, pastas, or salads as you would a hard cheese. --------------- Useful Salt Cured Egg Yolk Links: Bon Appétit Magazine: http://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/cured-egg-yolks --------- Contact Us: Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36701 [email protected] ---------- **HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT OUR CHANNEL?** -Make a Donation Through PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/CogHillFarm -Bookmark & Shop From The Following Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/?ie=UTF8&tag=cohifa06-20 -------------- Our Other Social Media Sites: -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CogHillFarm -Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/CogHillFarms -Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coghillfarm/ -Pintrest: https://www.pinterest.com/coghillfarms/ -Steemit: https://steemit.com/@coghill/ ------------- ***Some of Our Fav Resources, Books & Equipment*** -"The Gift of Southern Cooking-Scott Peacock -Edna Lewis": http://amzn.to/2bhZ6bM -Joel Salatin's Book "Pastured Poultry Profit$" http://amzn.to/2qeOQd7 ------------ Welcome To Cog Hill Farm & Homestead: the dancing farmer We are a small family farm & homestead located in Alabama & this is our story #KnowYourFarmer #KnowYourFood #GrowYourOwn If you are just beginning a homestead or just starting out, I hope these homesteading videos & our homestead channel are helpful! & keep dancing! cured eggs Life of Riley by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1400054 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

EASY DIY automatic pig waterer made with the pig drinker nipple or nipple setup. We are constantly having to clean & refill pig waterers several times a day here on the homestead, so I decided to try these automatic pig drinker nipples a shot. This way the pig's water stays much cleaner & you are not constantly having to refill the pig's water all the time, bc you use a food grade drum or barrel for your pig's water. I just used a 3/4" drill bit, which is slightly smaller than the drinker nipple, & then put some silicone on the drinker nipple to prevent any leaks, & screwed the pig drinker nipple in the food grade drum & let the silicone dry overnight. The next day I set the automatic pig waterer in the pig pen & filled the automatic waterer up with fresh water & even added some organic apple cider vinegar to the waterer, & that is it! Super EASY!! Now I am a little apprehensive if the american guinea hogs will actually use it, since they are mature pigs, but I thought it was worth a shot to try & train the pigs to actually use the automatic waterer, & I might even put some molasses on the drinker nipples, & see if that will entice the american guinea hogs to bite down on the drinker nipples & then the pigs will realize that water comes out of the drinker nipples & that there is clean fresh water in the drum. I will keep you updated on this automatic pig waterer & let you know how it works here on the farm, and if the american guinea hogs actually get use to the drinker nipple system & start to use the automatic pig waterer or not. So stay tuned for the pig waterer updates!! I hope you enjoyed this youtube video on the automatic pig waterer & watering system using the pig drinker nipple system! ----------------- ***Some of Our Fav Resources, Books & Equipment*** -"The Gift of Southern Cooking-Scott Peacock -Edna Lewis": http://amzn.to/2bhZ6bM -Joel Salatin's Book "Pastured Poultry Profit$" http://amzn.to/2qeOQd7 -"Epic Tomatoes: How to Select & Grow the Best Varieties of All Time" http://amzn.to/2swllI2 -"Saving the Season: A Cook's Guide to Home Canning, Pickling, and Preserving" -Kevin West http://amzn.to/2tgzt8o -"An Introduction to Heritage Breeds" http://amzn.to/2t5ZF2D -"Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds" http://amzn.to/2rkLBku -Bell-Matic Automatic Poultry Waterer we use: http://amzn.to/2pEU1Fn ----------------------------- Welcome To Cog Hill Farm & Homestead: We are a small family farm & homestead located in Alabama....and this is our story! #KnowYourFarmer #KnowYourFood #GrowYourOwn If you are just beginning a homestead or just starting out, I hope these homesteading videos & our homestead channel are helpful! Red Rangers vs Cornish Cross Part 2

In this video you will see what our has been thus far with Red Rangers vs the Cornish Cross, as we try to figure out Which is the better Meat Chicken?? ↓↓↓↓↓---Click SHOW MORE for more information on this---↓↓↓↓↓↓ Cog Hill Farm Merchandise: https://thecoghillfarm.com/shop Contact Us: Cog Hill Farm PO Box 2204 Selma, AL 36701 [email protected] ---------- **HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT OUR CHANNEL?** -Make a Donation Through PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/CogHillFarm -Bookmark & Shop From The Following Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/?ie=UTF8&tag=cohifa06-20 ----------- Watch Part One: https://youtu.be/sqJsY7ZlKWQ Part 2 of our Red Ranger versus the Cornish Cross Meat Chicken Series. In this video we are around week 7, & the cornish has really pulled away from the red ranger chicken in size a pretty good bit now. The first 3 to 4 weeks, they were fairly close in size, but now the cornish broiler has really passed by the red ranger broiler. As for their health, not much difference really. Both seem to be healthy, with no issues at this point. One of the main differences between the red ranger chicken and the cornish cross chicken, is their activity level. The Red Ranger chicken is much more active than the cornish cross broiler. The cornishes seem to sit down a lot, while the red ranger is running around, dust bathing, & chasing each other. Even the other day when it was raining, there were around 6 or 7 red ranger chickens running around, but only 2 cornishes outside. The rest of the cornishes were inside the chicken tractor, just kinda sitting around and eating their feed. We also weighed a few at week 7, and as you see in the video, the cornish is almost double in size compared to the red ranger. Most definitely a noticeable difference in the chest area. So right now, size wise, the cornish has really passed the red ranger, we still have a couple weeks on the cornishes, & I am guessing around 4 weeks on the red rangers, & my honest opinion at this point is this. Unless the red ranger has a much better flavor than the cornish rock, I really do not see how or why you would choose the red ranger over the cornish, but again we are week 7, & still have a few weeks left.....so stay tuned for the next red ranger vs the cornish cross episode! To Be Continued....... Thank y'all for watching our video, Red Rangers vs Cornish Cross Part 2 - Which is the better Meat Chicken?, hope you enjoyed it & hop you and your family have a wonderful day!
