The Patriot - Battle of Camden Movie Clip (HD)
On the foggy morning of August 16, 1780, American and British armies clashed in the pine woods north of Camden, South Carolina, in one of the most important and influential battles of the Revolutionary War. An American victory would quash British plans to subjugate the Southern colonies and virtually guarantee the independence of the fledgling United States. A victory for the British would pave the way for the conquest of North Carolina and Virginia. After nearly an hour of frenzied, bloody combat, the British army emerged victorious, and American morale plummeted to its lowest point of the war. The rout at Camden was not a total loss, however, as Patriot forces eventually came away with a renewed determination to resist British advances, and the lessons from the defeat were applied to secure future victories that finally allowed the Patriots to triumph in the South. This engaging new book presents the Battle of Camden as never before: through the eyes and words of American and British participants and contemporary observers. The events leading up to the conflict, the combat itself and the consequences of Camden are all described in striking detail. The cunning strategies of both American Major General Horatio Gates and British Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis are revealed, as are a number of battlefield reports from soldiers on both sides. In addition to these compelling firsthand accounts, The Battle of Camden includes analysis of the battle and its effects in America and Europe from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Lord George Germain. With this landmark text, author and historian Jim Piecuch offers a comprehensive consideration of a vital Revolutionary battle and its effects on the war for American independence.

The red coat has evolved from being the British infantryman's ordinary uniform to a garment retained only for ceremonial purposes. Its official adoption dates from February 1645, when the Parliament of England passed the New Model Army ordinance. The new English Army (there was no 'Britain' until the union with Scotland in 1707) was formed of 22,000 men, divided into 12 foot regiments of 1200 men each, 11 horse regiments of 600 men each, one dragoon regiment of 1000 men, and the artillery, consisting of 50 guns. The infantry regiments wore coats of Venetian red with white facings. However, the uniforms of the Yeoman of the Guard (formed 1485) and the Yeomen Warders (also formed 1485) have traditionally been in Tudor red and gold and indicate that the tradition of English Infantry wearing red coats may long predate the formation of the New Model Army. Oliver Cromwell wrote to Sir William Spring in 1643: "I had rather have a plain, russet-coated captain that knows what he fights for, and loves what he knows, than that which you call a gentleman and is nothing else" (Oxford Dictionary of Quotations) The adoption and continuing use of red by most English soldiers after the Restoration (1660) was the result of circumstances rather than policy, including the relative cheapness of red dyes. There is no known basis for the myth that red coats were favoured because they did not show blood stains. Blood does in fact show on red clothing as a black stain. From an early stage red coats were lined with contrasting colours and turned out to provide distinctive regimental 'facings' (lapels, cuffs and collars). Examples were blue for the 8th Regiment of Foot, scarlet for the 33rd Regiment of Foot, yellow for the 44th Regiment of Foot and buff for the 3rd Regiment of Foot. An attempt at standardisation was made following the Childers Reforms of 1881, with English and Welsh regiments having white, Scottish yellow, Irish green and Royal regiments dark blue. However some regiments were subsequently able to obtain the reintroduction of historic facing colours that had been uniquely theirs. British soldiers fought in scarlet tunics for the last time at the Battle of Gennis on 30 December 1885. The uniform of the Coldstream Guards circa 1900 in a painting by William Barnes WollenEven after the adoption of khaki service dress in 1902, most British infantry and some cavalry regiments continued to wear scarlet tunics on parade and for off-duty "walking out dress", until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Scarlet tunics ceased to be general issue upon British mobilisation in August 1914. The Brigade of Guards resumed wearing their scarlet full dress in 1920 but for the remainder of the Army red coats were only authorised for wear by regimental bands and officers in mess dress or on certain limited social or ceremonial occasions (notably attendance at Court functions or weddings). The reason for not generally reintroducing the distinctive full dress was primarily financial, as the scarlet cloth requires expensive cochineal dye.

How to Find a Matching Tie for Your Suit
Watch more Men's Fashion 101 videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/241603-How-to-Find-a-Matching-Tie-for-Your-Suit Make sure you’re sending the right message with your neckwear choice. Step 1: Combine patterns with solids Combine solid-colored pieces with patterned pieces. Pair pinstriped suits with plain ties or pair suits with small patterns with ties with a larger pattern. Step 2: Consider the shirt Wear plain shirts with patterned suits and ties and striped shirts with plain suits and solid color ties. Step 3: Know how to coordinate Coordinate pale blue shirts with red, yellow, burgundy, gold, and navy ties. Wear pale pink shirts with navy and burgundy ties. Tip Pale men should stick with lighter colors, red-heads look best in green shades, and darker-skinned men wear bright colors well. Step 4: Contrast color Find a balance between contrast and clownish. Jazz up a dark blue suit and light blue shirt with an orange tie. Pair a dark blue suit and white shirt with a softer pink, light green, or pale blue tie. Tip If you’re looking for a challenge, wear striped shirts with color-coordinating paisley, dots, or box-patterned ties. Step 5: Match difficult suits Match checked or hound’s-tooth suits with solid-colored shirts and a coordinating patterned tie, but think twice about venturing out in a plaid suit. Did You Know? Did you know? U.S. tailor Jesse Langsdorf patented the modern tie in 1924.

18th Century Layers (1740-1770)
18th century layers appropriate for the upper-middle class lady or noblewoman, 1740-1770. 1. Before the gown, AKA robe, you begin with the basics: a). Linen chemise (e.g. shift) b). Stockings, silk ribbon garters, and shoes (shoes not included in this video) c). Stays (corset) d). Pockets and a "modesty" slip (not included in video) e). Optional cap and fichu (kerchief tucked about the bosom) If a cap is not going to be worn, it's usually best to have the hair done beforehand, but this is largely optional. For this video, her hair is done in the braided style of 1730-1750. 2. The first layer is one of five hip supports seen in the 18th century. The period 1740-1770 commonly used paniers, pocket hoops or (for 1770) bum rolls. A small set of paniers were used here. 3. Next are the petticoats, usually three or four that may be made out of cheap fabric. Two were used here. Authentic petticoats should have drawstrings that tie in front and back. This made them waist-adjustable, crucial for 18th century frugality. 4. If your ensemble includes a decorative silk taffeta or satin petticoat, put that on. This is the last petticoat that goes on before the gown. 5. You fasten a jacket, gown, redingote (riding coat), etc over the stays with pins (buttons were only used for coats during this time). The typical gowns for 1740-1760 were the mantua, robe à la française (French robe, or gown) and in 1770, the l'anglaise and polonaise, besides a variety of jackets. (See below for more on the robe à la française.) 6. Finally, you baste or pin on the "engageantes," the nice lacy things you see on the elbows. Lace was expensive during the 18th c., so the richer you were, the more lace you had (maids, servants had little to none). They were made separate from the gown for easy laundering. Note: The française was made in two ways: with "closed" or "open" fronts. The open fronts were such that they were cut so that a V-shaped opening over the stomach was filled with a piece of decorative fabric called a "stomacher." The popular kinds of stomacher were covered with silk ruched bows or made to imitate the stay lacings seen on poorer folk. Here, she is putting on a gown with a closed front, which needs no stomacher because the fabric was cut to meet in center front. This particular gown was also made with a stand-up Van Dyke collar, which can be seen in paintings by Fragonard and fashion plates. This wasn't a style you'd see every day, but more or less a fancy ball or masquerade gown.

How to put on a yukata.
Japanese inns provide guests with a comfortable cotton kimono called a yukata. These can be worn throughout your stay at the inn. Guests often appear in their yukatas for dinner. They are also worn as nightwear when sleeping. The correct way to wear the yukata is to fold the left side over the right at the front. Tie the belt (obi) around your waist to hold the yukata together and keep the knot at the back. When it is chilly there are coats called "haori" that can be worn over the yukata. You can also wear long underwear to keep warm. It is also perfectly acceptable to venture into the neighbourhood for a stroll in your yukata and haori.
