So, how can we make the fashion industry more sustainable? It’s easy, claims social scientist and Creative Director Fredrik Wikholm, we just need ethics, environment and economics to be buddies. With his new innovation “The Rag Bag” Fredrik challenges the business to take action now, before it’s too late. It was the creative mindset and will to change, rather than skills in textile design that brought Fredrik Wikholm and his snowboard collective to start up a fashion brand that focused on sustainability. Now he’s taking recycling to the next level with an open-source innovation institute to pave ways for the fashion industry to make more sustainable choices. But, most of us don't encounter haute couture very often, unless we're looking at a celebrity on the red carpet, a model on a catwalk, or a mannequin in a museum case. We wanted to get closer to couture — and to get you closer to couture — so we partnered with the legendary fashion publisher Visionaire to create this video, which tells the story of one dress from birth to runway. It’s a unique look inside the Dior atelier, where the team has been hard at work bringing creative director Raf Simons’ ideas to life. While an individual couture garment can take half a year to produce, here you will see the story of one dress (“Look #53,” in fashion-speak) come together in just a few minutes — from the first muslin pattern to the final style model Kinga Rajzak wore during yesterday’s haute couture show. It’s an incredible revelation, and when you discover what goes into these garments, the crazy prices on couture start to seem at least a little less crazy. While Look #53 is the star of the show, the video gives us the chance to reconnect with the rarely credited artisans and seamstresses we saw in Dior and I, as well as a cameo from Simons himself. Think of this as a mini-trip to Paris or a crash course into fashion’s highest form; either way, enjoy your couture, concentrated. We live in times of unprecedented, disruptive change and uncertainty and most people find it challenging to thrive in those circumstances. If ‘design thinking’ is the new black, then thinking like a fashion design may just be the next big thing! This talk takes the idea of design thinking and translates it into a series of very practical tips that you can employ yourself, every day to help you think more optimistically in times of uncertainty and ambiguity. Professor Suzi Vaughan has settled (for now) in Brisbane, Australia having studied, lived and worked in Europe and Asia. After graduating from St Martins School of Art in London with a Ba Hons in Fashion, she started her professional career as a fashion designer, later moving into fashion education. Since 2011 she has been part of the executive team of a large Australian university. With over thirty years’ experience of design practice and teaching, she has become an advocate for the power and potential of design thinking. Unfortunately, people don‘t often consider who is paying the real price. #whomademyclothes We placed a bright turquoise vending machine, offering t-shirts for 2 Euros, at Alexanderplatz in Berlin, to test whether people would still buy it when they are confronted with the conditions in which it was produced. Eight out of ten shoppers decided against it! 24 April every year is Fashion Revolution Day which is held in memory of the 1,133 workers killed in 2013 when the Rana Plaza garment factory in Bangladesh collapsed. We need greater transparency in the fashion supply chain because we can't improve conditions or protect the environment without knowing where our clothes are made. We need to challenge brands and retailers to take responsibility for the people and communities on which their business depends. After moving to New York and being mentored by some of the top names in the fashion industry, a new label was born. Arturo Castañeda left Mercedes, Texas and his journey brought him to New York City. His fashion sense and creativity were discovered, eventually landing him a job as a concept designer for Ralph Lauren. Arturo went on to co-found Cielo Brands a personal styling and clothing company where he works with professional athletes and entertainers. He frequently visits the Rio Grande Valley to share his journey and inspire others to dream big. A unique clothing business supported by Innovate UK offers customers the chance to co-create their garments and have them made in 48 hours. Start-up clothing business Unmade (https://preview.unmade.com/) has launched innovative new products that will allow shoppers to co-create clothing online or in store and have them made within a few days The business got off the ground after an Innovate UK-funded feasibility study allowed co-founders Ben Alun-Jones, Kirsty Emery and Hal Watts to test out their idea for Knyttan, a unique software platform. Unmade worked with music superstar and fashion icon Will.i.am. By the end of the study in late 2013 the trio knew Knyttan would work. A project with pop star Will.i.am helped to keep things moving. They then joined a Techstars accelerator programme that helped them to meet investors and attract £2 million in seed funding. Today, the clothing design business employs 22 people at Somerset House in London, where three industrial knitting machines are accepting orders of everything from men's knitwear to custom scarves. A pop-up store housing a further knitting machine has just opened in Covent Garden. Unmade is working with leading designers, including Christopher Raeburn, Studio Moross, Malika Favre and Moniker, who have created the templates that shoppers use to customise garments to their own taste. Green patent high heels 16. Mid shot of mannequins. FASHION BRAND CREW LAUNCH IN HONG KONG Fashion brand "JCrew" is arriving fashionably late to China. The iconic American brand is testing the water in the Chinese market by collaborating with Lane Crawford, an upscale department store. Starting October, a curated selection of JCrew collection is being sold in Lane Crawford's retail space in Hong Kong and Beijing. JCrew, who operates 277 retail stores in North America, is making a come back in Asia after its franchise in Tokyo folded in 2009. To celebrate the launch, CEO Millard (Mickey) Drexler and Creative Director, Jenna Lyons were both in attendance at the Lane Crawford store in Hong Kong on Thursday October 11th. In an interview with the Associated Press Drexler said that he's always been very selective about expansion. His priority was to upgrade the products, explore opportunities in the US, and strategize the company for growth. According to Drexler, JCrew's arrival in the Chinese market is about timing and it wasn't the right timing until now. While other business see the Chinese market as a key to their future, Drexler does not. He explained, "we're not in a hurry. I know that opportunities in China are great and we will be there when we need to. But I don't ever feel you're late in the fashion business because fashion by definition is something new anyway. So if we're new in a year or two or three, so be it. " Creative Director Jenna Lyons is excited to learn that customers have responded warmly to JCrew's inception in Hong Kong, which cemented her belief that style has no address. Lyons said that the feedback from Hong Kong customers are very similar to the ones in the US. However, it's the way that the customers put the ensemble together that set them apart. Q:Are wigs required or is it okay to send in pics using your natural hair? A: You can totally use your own hair! It is definitely NOT a requirement to take a photo of yourself in a wig unless specified in the application. :3 Q: What about sizing requirements? Can a big girl like me model for burando? A: Sizing is super tricky! You have to remember that these are japanese brands that you want to model for, so the sizing restrictions can be pretty intense.
