I wonder how you smell. Like perfumes you wear.

I’m actually not a fan of getting noticed at all but...I have this big oversized sweater with a silly saying on it and I can’t tell you how many people have stopped me to talk about it. I have had long conversations with strangers who I might never have met.

I looove these tips!

How does one find comfortable but standout pumps? Buying cute shoes that hurt your feet is meh.

I’m extremely introverted, but my style has always been based around standing out. As much as I can be a hermit at times, I’m most happy when I’m shining bright like the sun
Nessie B (10 months ago)
Yes! I’m no fan of chit-chatting w/ strangers, so I’m for anything that sends a message to all without me having to speak. Off the top of my head, an interesting example of this approach to style is Queen Elizabeth II: talk about someone who knows a thing or two about being noticeable in a large entourage, dressing to convey subtle clues, and working an audience without wasting a word. I actually hit subscribe b/c of your anti-style series (even though I confess to being something of a dated Debbie, lol... ) I love it that you don’t do silly handholding, nor Pinterest-quotey empowerment woo-woo that helps no one, but tell it straight and give actual advice for the real world.

Dave Kerpen- The Art of people- the guy with orange shoes. When you were talking about shoes in the beginning that's the first thing that popped in my mind and then you actually mentioned it :) I agree with you and you absolutely made a point with this video <3

Color, texture and layering with different types of fabrics really helps too! People usually approach me or are super nice at first glance!

I decided to test out the use of color, as a means to get friendly attention. Since I was on a road trip by myself, I felt my results might be more accurate than doing something at work. On the trip out of town, I wore blue jeans with some nice tops that could be layered with a necklace. I stopped to eat, get gas, rent a hotel room, etc. ... Nothing special happened. Most conversations were typical. The best comment I got was someone liked my necklace. On the way back home, I wore red jeans with a lime green tshirt, no necklace. The colors were bold and the combo made me look fat. ... It seemed like everyone wanted to talk with me. People asked me about my day, they asked if they ould help me, they wanted to tell me about their traveling experiences, they wished me a nice day and actually meant it. I had full blown conversations with people I didn't even know, and I was interested in what they had to say. ... I was amazed. It was like living in a completely different universe.

It is so upset that your tips don’t work in Russia. Nobody tells stranger woman how amazing she looks on the party. People can stare at her, don’t compliment her. But may be these tips really are helpfully an events for employees.

Thanks, your videos are very helpful! I recently wore a hat to an event and had a flock of people coming to me.

I am a young professional working at City Hall but live in a hot climate. I wanted to try business capris but had issues with trying to find capris for my short stature. What are some tips for finding an ideal capri or what should I consider when getting the capri altered? Thank you!

Holly B Buy some and get them shortened.

i have a bright red linen suit, i usually wear the pants or balzer separately, but if i want the power suit feeling I'll wear them together and it does make me feel kickass which gives me a confidence boost :))

Great tips! I like adding a quirky vintage pins on my blazer or cute shoes. Also my big curly fro helps me stand out. I am an observer and it helps me break the ice without being weird.

Great advice Lauren very true!
veronicajade20 (11 months ago)
Wearing all black and just pairing it with statement jewelry or bright colored shoes, is my go to easy method for looking put together and interesting. It also helps in getting the attention of someone I’m interested in speaking to. Great tips! 👍
veronicajade20 (11 months ago)
I know! I love all the necklaces you wear in your videos! ❤️❤️❤️
Lauren Messiah (11 months ago)
you know I love a piece of statement jewelry! XO
Teresa Darnielle Morse (11 months ago)
This was fun. I work in a very conservative industry but add a piece of turquoise or vintage jewelry to my outfits most days. It cheers me up if nothing else.
Lauren Messiah (11 months ago)
Love it! I almost forgot how much I love shopping for vintage jewelry.
Jay Kay (11 months ago)
Thx for this info Lauren you are in my top five fave ppl to watch on Youtube!!! As for your topic today, I had read, "If you want to get noticed never wear navy or black."
Jay Kay (11 months ago)
Yes you truly impact my life! Especially when you asked us to name three words to describe our style. Three words that we would want to describe our style as. You brought my personal style right into sharp focus (and out of a confusing hazy murky dazed and confused FOG) with that advice, I will always be grateful to you Lauren.lol! Seriously! 8) Your advice is EXCELLENT.

My hair color always stands out! I get so many people walking up to me, in very conservative Utah, complimenting the color and style and asking how I did it. People think I'm a hairstylist!
Lauren Messiah (11 months ago)
That is a badass shade of blue!
Anne D. (11 months ago)
Also, I changed my wardrobe a lot thanks to your videos and challenges. It did help me a lot to attract people and respect me without having to rely on words, haha. I'm such an introvert.
Lauren Messiah (11 months ago)
Yay! So happy to hear that.
Anne D. (11 months ago)
How your style changed with your new hair style is just amazing. Loving this outfit im particular.

One of my favorite conversation starters is my yellow blazer or my fuschia pumps. 😄
Lauren Messiah (11 months ago)
Nice!! I need a yellow blazer in my life

Motion is another eye-catcher. Fabrics with drape/movement attract the eye.
Lauren Messiah (11 months ago)
Ooh great tip!
Mariya (11 months ago)
Llllllove that!
youtimeful (11 months ago)
Great points!!  Working in tech, it can be very tough to get people to initiate conversations since many are extreme introverts.  What I find is that I tend to wear some bright color but just dressing well with correct fit, jewelry, style for my body and leveling it up a bit can really make people feel at ease.  And always, a genuine smile and compassionate eye contact.

These were great tips. What advice would you have for someone in the process of losing weight, like me? Shopping is expensive and I'm in this new journey with discovering myself.

So, you dress to tell story too :-)
Olaa F (11 months ago)
Hi Lauren! How do you rock monochromatic outfits that aren't all black?
Irene Gudas (11 months ago)
Olaa F In my opinion, choose your favorite color. Additionally, accessorize! Just choose pieces that fit you well and compliment your skin, hair and eyes. Like everything else, just have fun!
Mirabelle M. (11 months ago)
Olaa F buying sets usually works! Finding two pieces or colors that are common or you know the brand carries lots of pieces in a specific color that isn’t black. I love light blue bodysuits suits with high waisted pants and I found a few brands (like Calvin Klein) that make these items in specific colors.
Amber Burnett (11 months ago)
Yes Lauren, this is so good. Recently I was at a conference and saw a woman wearing black but she threw on a bright pink blazer (maybe j crew and so well tailored) and it drew me to her. I couldn’t stop staring at her so I went up to her and told her how amazing she looked. She was so happy I complimented her and it made me feel good too. Women supporting women moment.

This was very helpful. This month I have an event to go to for employees at a company I work for. I’m currently trying to put together an outfit that stands out. A great way to get noticed is to warmly approach people and ask what they do for a living then compliment them . I found that to work well depending on the event people are attending.
