Major props to Cormac McCarthy. Read the Crossing - it's also fantastic.

I would have assumed a bag with that much money would be tracked. I’d probably have fanned through it all until I found it, or if I didn’t, I’d have assumed it was in the material of the bag itself. At that point you turn your shirt into a bag and use that.

Credit to the Cohen Bros. for casting Brolin. He was pretty much out of show business (as far as major motion picture roles) - it was a brilliant casting choice by them.

Should have just walked away....Or taken a part of that money. Leave the bag.

First you take one of the vehicles and drive the track. Two, you wouldn’t wait on the ridge with the sun overhead in view like that. Circle around and come over the reverse slope out of site and finish it. You can’t wait because more might show and you’re exposed. Time is the key. Dumb. Hire some tactical cats.

He was gauging how long he'd been sitting there with how the shade was cast from the tree.Knowing how the sun rises & set's, its track across the daytime sky would give him pretty much spot on estimate plus/minus 15min.

No matter how many times I watch No Country, I'm struck by Llewelyn's taciturn, battle-hardened, everyman nature. I'm far more struck, however, by how consistently poor his decisions are.
Avengerie (6 months ago)
I agree and disagree. He reminds me of the "strong, silent type" from the Sopranos. As for his decisions, I think they are consistent with the characterization you gave him. Back then all the information he could have known would come from his father (I suspect he wasn't very hands-on), school (likely a dropout), books (doesn't strike me as passionate reader) and the army. No Internet back then. He had no way of knowing about the transponder. Aside from that, the decision to bring the guy water was a natural for an average person not involved in criminal activities. He came at dawn, and it was supposed to be a quick delivery. What else do you think he did wrong?

In 1980, not many would've thought about a tracer in the satchel. And 2.5 mil then had the buying power of 7.5 mil today! I actually checked the BLS stats on that. Goddamn inflation still kills over 30 years even if it's only a couple percent.

The moment cartel found out the money was missing, Liewelyn became a dead man. The cartel was able to search the residents background, having a profile on every single person living near by. It wasn't hard for them to figure out the most probable candidate to be at the middle of a desert - a vietnam vet who enjoys hunting. The radio transmitter only transmits a limited range, gave the trackers a more precise location of where it is. It wasn't the main tool they used to narrow down on Llewelyns location. The best course of action for Llewelyn was to take a few piles of cash, a few guns and a few bags of drug. Enough for him to live comfortably but not enough for the Cartels to hire somebody to track him down. If he really wanted to keep all that money, he had to change his name, moved to a different country, and lived a complete different life style, cut all ties to his family and friends. But like Carson said, he wasn't cut out for this.

@MrTron I would always keep water on me, especially if I were living in an arid area. I would have given him my bottle of water and just disappeared. Of course this is 1980 and I am not fromTexas, LOL! xD

@Super.Chuck That is right. It was 1980. No, Internet, no high-tech devices for the average Joe.
John Citizen (7 months ago)
@MrTron he was a veteran he should have known
MrTron (8 months ago)
They only thing that doomed him was going back to give the dying guy water. He left his truck when the cartel guys chased him, which allowed Anton to find the truck and find out who owned it. That let Anton show up right at his door, not that he was home at the time. If not for the truck they never would have had any idea who took the money.
Super.Chuck (9 months ago)
The movie is set in the 1970s, not many people aware of trackers, etc. As for the cartels doing research, it's the 70s, AIN'T no place to do that kinda research. the only search teh cartels had to do was run the truck VIN, which they are shown taking off teh door ID plate, the vehicle registration would easily show his home address

Love the fact that it’s sunny out before he finds the money no sign of rain or anything but as soon as he finds the satchel when he’s walking back to his truck there’s a thunderstorm brewing in the background, foreshadowing what’s to come. It’s not shown at the end of this but It was a cool addition to the film.

"The dead man was lying against a rock with a nickelplated government .45 automatic lying cocked in the grass between his legs. He'd been sitting up and had slid over sideways. His eyes were open. He looked like he was studying something small in the grass. There was blood on the ground and blood on the rock behind him. The blood was still a dark red but then it was still shaded from the sun. Moss picked up the pistol and pressed the grip safety with his thumb and lowered the hammer."

You would think they would use a period correct weapon( no laminate stock guns in 1980) and also, no hunter would slam his scoped rifle down on the tailgate of a truck 00:10 ! You carry and set a scoped weapon down like it is florecent light bulb ! a Obviously a hollywood liberal with NO firearms experience !

cool how he checks his watch to gauge how long the guy was sitting against the tree. The wounded man would have obviously picked the shady side of the tree, which would have put it at a pretty specific time in the morning

serious question. if anyone ever came onto this amount of money today, what's your first step to making it usable, for the average joe? you can't just go and start spending it on everything. how would you legitimize that money so that there would never be questions?
BobLoblaw23 (1 year ago)
Sorry for late response. I think Llewellyn had a bit more moxy than the rest. He was incredibly resourceful as well as being charming. After all, not everyday someone survives a gun battle with Chigurh, and then gets an old hard ass border agent to him through without any sort of identification. I'm sure he would have found some way to purchase a ranch for him and Carla Jean. As long he kept a low profile, he honestly think he would have been fine.
StopFlaggingVideos (1 year ago)
so basically you're telling me llewellyn never really had a chance with that money unless he really meant to live a life of drink and hookers
BobLoblaw23 (1 year ago)
StopFlaggingVideos you would have to launder it. Small time drug dealers often hold cash currency jobs. Waiter/bartender and claim the drug money as tips. As for big time cash like that, I'm certain you would need friends in high places.

Split open 4-5 of the money bundles and scatter them to the wind, take the rest of the money out of the satchel and bury it in various spots as you walked out, leave a scatter load of bills in the satchel with it left wide open at the two trees. As if someone in a hurry took as much money as they could like one of the participants in the exchange. Don't take any money home with you at all. Then lie low for a year. Bad guys would find the tracking device wherever it was and the money that was with it. The rest is gone. And never talk about it or go back by that area for a year. Of course then there is no story for the movie but in real life you don't want a story.

10 min ..I figure he's been injured..laying against a tree and if he hasn't moved one time ..youd figure hed swat a fly of his face,?move his leg..something? One of my favorite movies. Sicario kind of has the same palette. You could see Moss as one of Matt's uncles who met a tragic fate. A lot of 'what ifs' in the comments don't take into account the movie takes place in 1980--- before tracker transmitters and dye packs, etc., became common knowledge. I read the book before I saw the movie, so I knew it would end badly for the hero. I was kind of hoping the Coens might do a different ending and let Moss get away, but, nope. Cormac McCarthy's best book is Blood Meridian which makes No Country look like a sweet fairy tale. It is absolutely blood-soaked. Be hard for a movie adaptation, but the Coens could do it, despite their crappy True Grit. David Lynch and the dude who directed Revanant would be good choices, too.
If I found that crime scene first thing I would do is collect every gun there, I'd take one bag of the drugs & bail out of there... Llewelyn had the Vietnam experience so he had the instincts to know the money was up for grabs somewhere close-by... Very clever film.
