T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" documentary (1987)

135 ratings | 7259 views
Read by noted actors Michael Gough, Edward Fox, and Eileen Atkins, T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land powerfully expresses the disillusionment and disgust of the post–World War I era in Europe. In this program, Professor Frank Kermode, of Cambridge University; Eliot biographer Peter Ackroyd; and poets Sir Stephen Spender and Craig Raine examine the complex nature of Eliot’s influential poem, analyze its appeal, and trace the reasons why it became one of the best-known emblems of the 20th century. The guy with the beard 3:32 made a comment that is ostensibly predicated on his personal prejuice against Yeats, the reason might be the theme of Irish nationalism that runs widely in his poetry, which was a revolt against the British ferocious oppression of the natives of Ireland. There's no denying that Eliot was an exceptionally gifted poet and probably a representative poet of the modern world, but saying that he was far better that Yeats is a rather a preposterous statement cuz every poet has his own faculty, his own preference, his own inclination. If Eliot's poetry reflects the state of the fractured society of the modern world; Yeats' poetic work deals with rather diverse themes from Romanticism to Irish nationalism to Modernism to the reincartion of soul and civilization. Nonetheless, both of them were inordinately genius men.

Thank you for uploading this. Ite explains a lot about Elliot's insights to life during his time and his predictions for the future to come based on his experiences at the time.
