Hey Russ, as a recovering (always) addict and special needs Mum, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I've been sober for just over 10 yrs now, since discovering I was pregnant with my 3rd child. Thank whatever deity/force of the universe for that recovery, as she, my 3rd child, was diagnosed with autism, OCD and anxiety disorder at 5. I want to thank you mate. For stopping me self medicate the stress and pain I feel for her and her own daily struggle to make sence of this world. Sober...I can help her do that. Staying off prescription meds and marijuana is a daily struggle. To self medicate to reduce anxiety is a massive daily struggle. Especially as her very high special needs are 100% 24/7 and are FULL ON !!! It's bloody hard. But you've helped me know it's completely ok to struggle with sobriety. Its ok to admit that Im not doing ok sometimes, to ask for help and it's ok to be human-one with flaws. Something that parents of special needs children feel they must NEVER EVER have or show-basic human flaws. I'm saving to buy your latest book as I KNOW I'll struggle with sobriety and other addictions for the rest of my life. Thanku for sharing your journey. Ps Your live show in Melbourne Australia KICKED ARSE MATE. When oh when can you come back? Bring the wee little lady too 😊

nice (adj.) Look up nice at Dictionary.com late 13c., "foolish, stupid, senseless," from Old French nice (12c.) "careless, clumsy; weak; poor, needy; simple, stupid, silly, foolish," from Latin nescius "ignorant, unaware," literally "not-knowing," from ne- "not" (from PIE root *ne- "not") + stem of scire "to know" (see science). "The sense development has been extraordinary, even for an adj." [Weekley] -- from "timid" (pre-1300); to "fussy, fastidious" (late 14c.); to "dainty, delicate" (c. 1400); to "precise, careful" (1500s, preserved in such terms as a nice distinction and nice and early); to "agreeable, delightful" (1769); to "kind, thoughtful" (1830). In many examples from the 16th and 17th centuries it is difficult to say in what particular sense the writer intended it to be taken. [OED] By 1926, it was pronounced "too great a favorite with the ladies, who have charmed out of it all its individuality and converted it into a mere diffuser of vague and mild agreeableness." [Fowler] "I am sure," cried Catherine, "I did not mean to say anything wrong; but it is a nice book, and why should I not call it so?" "Very true," said Henry, "and this is a very nice day, and we are taking a very nice walk; and you are two very nice young ladies. Oh! It is a very nice word indeed! It does for everything." [Jane Austen, "Northanger Abbey," 1803]

No matter how faint or brief, if you travel beyond this beguiling veil, you will know there is a thread of gossamer strung between that of bliss and despair, and you will learn that there is no going back. To transcend is not necessarily a flight into rapture, but a look beyond the curtain at the truth, a truth that underscores the perfect lie that is this world, this realm, this place we call home, this facade we call reality. Transcending doesn't bring peace - it brings down your walls and leaves you to pick up the pieces, and with those human hands of yours you are left with the potential to rebuild what your consciousness experiences, like a caterpillar breaking down its cells to rebuild into a butterfly.
huxleypig69 (1 year ago)
If you accept that you have no power to control your own life then how did you end up addicted in the first place? How did this video end up on Youtube? That's a mad philosophy, and I know it is part of the 12 steps but it is clearly bullshit. If you can't do the 12 steps without accepting this then maybe the 12 steps need revision? I am a recovering addict and I did not have to put myself through this insanity.

Hi Russel, My older brother is currently dealing with a heroin addiction and we're having some major struggles trying to help him. He has told us that he wants to stop using but he refuses to go to inpatient rehab because he thinks that he's smarter than everyone else and the people working at rehab facilities are just paper-pushers and don't know what they're doing. He has had two DUIs and he has overdosed and been rushed to the hospital twice in a week within the last month. As far as I know he has been clean from heroin for a couple weeks but when he's not doing heroin he's drinking himself to oblivion, so he's really just swapping out one addiction for another. The stress was so much for me that I had to drop out of uni so I could afford to move out of my dad's house where I was living and be away from the negative environment. My dad is being totally impossible in the entire situation and completely protecting him from any of the consequences of his actions - letting him live in his house for free at 26 years old, hiring him the best lawyers to reduce his sentences for his DUIs and the other trouble he's gotten in, etc. and he's not following through on anything he's been saying he will do to keep him safe. I am at a loss as to what to do and there's a part of me that says it's time for me to walk away from the situation and stop helping until everyone involved gets their shit together and is willing to do what it takes to fix the problem. But I love my family and I'm terrified of what's going to happen if I'm not there taking what little control I have over the situation. Do you have any advice about any of this?

My higher self? Have I got different selves? My self is always exactly where I am. If I have other selves, I don't know where they are. Anyway, everyday, I eat Nutella... and then I have a wank. (or the other way around. There's no law, is there?)

Top advice as per usual, Russ. Co dependency is so true. My addiction manifested from a 23 years gear addiction to a self centred pot head and my partner leaving me was the best thing that happened to me while in active addiction. Now I'm on the recovery train in an Ashram in Uttarakhand North 🇮🇳 practising guided Isha Kriya meditation and some gentle yoga. I'm down to 1mg of buprenorphine a day and heading back to Blighty next week, where I aim to carry on with my meditation & Iyengar Yoga classes as well as being involved with pre detox groups at Lifeline. I'm aiming to be completely off my subbies by April, which is when the real hard work will begin. Luckily my key worker is on my wavelength and is in recovery himself via the 12 step programme. I can't stress enough how much meditation and yoga have been instrumental in me achieving this spiritual awakening. There is no duality. It's all Oneness and spending 2 weeks in this Himalayan ashram has been so humble, loving and compassionate. I haven't even seen another Western face for the 2 weeks here which makes it all the more enlightening. All I can say to any others wanting to get clean & stay clean, is that it all comes from within. Once you find peace, unconditional infinite love and compassion, you're on the right path. You will only be forgiven if you're willing to forgive all. Hare Krishna to you, brother 🕉️

Your like every ones agony uncle, wisdom blossoms from every orifice if we like it or not. And that's why we love you, anyway about higher self we all have one, finding this higher self is like tuning in a radio, turning on and tuning in is actually hard at first especially if we don't know what frequency we're looking for. I meditate and have done for the past 20 years and it has worked wonders for my mental well being. Helped me a lot with drug addiction even though i became a hermit for a couple of months. I would be very interested if you had this road of progression when addiction was apart of your life, the light at the end of a tunnel so to speak. Peace be unto you ;)

Watching a millionaire hipster give people advice on being a better person, this guy was shagger of the year. Can you believe the arrogance of this empty headed moron, funny you weren't enlightened before you received the script for Arthur, but your bank account is enlightened, this crap is just white noise what happened to this man. BEING A BETTER PERSON IT'S CALLED HAVING TIME & MONEY.

Thanks Russell, sometimes we have to be humble enough to realize, accept and surrender to the fact that sometimes we can't do it by ourselves and need help, from our fellow human beings or the Divine; it's part of the purpose of being here; we're here to look after and care for each other with love, kindness and compassion. After all can a baby or maybe a child look after itself, and we are all God's children. God or Divine Mother is the answer to every problem and difficulty, they are there as our shepherds to look after us and protect us. They Love you unconditionally, pray and reach out to them, or maybe they will reach out to you. Surrender to the Divine, we are not alone. Divine Mother Bless you, David  :)

Hi Russell, Can you please help with the publicity of saving NHS with "WatMed Media" --It's series of posts on FB by doctors here? Have been in England for 14 years and been working in the Health service. With this government's policy of cutting down funding and closing down hospitals, there won't be NHS in the future. I don't think people really realise what the Tories've been doing. I've come from a country where we accept our fates that only the rich can have privileges. NHS has opened my eyes to humanity. (sorry it's not related to the drug problems on this Trews, but don't know where i can write to you)

I RARELY leave comments but feel I would be remiss if I did not truly thank you for your words through this video. Everything hit home--from moving to a new city unsuccessfully in an attempt to escape my issues/self, to dealing with addiction and relapsing, even to choosing drugs over a relationship. I made an appointment with a therapist today in ANOTHER attempt to try and get well; hoping this time it sticks. Just wanted to say thanks, and you are truly paying it forward.

For Anna, or anyone in her position like her, Russell is so right. I was married to a drug addict & I had it stuck in my mind he SHOULD be a good husband & Father, & he very well might die if I left him. He almost did die. But my stable, adoring, & NOT abusive high school bf wanted to marry me (again, we were too young the first time), when I was legally separated the 2nd time from my husband. I said no, I was determined to keep my "family" together, such as it was. I left him for good shortly after, moving to another state due to his stalking & abuse. My high school bf/best friend married a girl that had been stalking him, & she eventually killed him. Now I've spent my life living with that mistake, I mean MISTAKES, knowing he was such a good person who treated me so well, & my choices led to my baby son being traumatized & his death. My point is, you have to take care of yourself, I never never tried to change anyone or their behavior again, & I never got over the death of my soulmate because I was codependent on my addict husband at the time. Also, by the time I left him 3 yrs married, I was SO burnt emotionally I never had the patience/tolerance again, same reason I didn't listen to my 1st love when he said he never imagined having a family with anyone with me & remember all our plans? So 20 yrs later I wish I had been healthy enough to walk away from such a sick relationship, it was NEVER love. Don't learn this lesson the hard way, no matter how much you think you love him, it's a one way love & you deserve better, you won't get it while you're taking responsibility for him & YOU CAN'T SAVE HIM FROM HIMSELF!
BioNattyNo (1 year ago)
Hi Russel, I definitely accept the idea of the higher self, I study psychology as part of my degree (I am also finishing a degree, however I am not suffering from a lack of motivation, as part of my sociological dissertation I am study social control and resistance) and it is clear to see that there are many levels of the self. You gave the example of anger and how you become lost to yourself, but what about other emotions like happiness? What is the nature of the higher self? Is it completely void of any emotion as it is simply the passive witness of these and similar phenomena, or is more about peace and contentment? Or is there maybe an aspect of ascending frequencies with say happiness being closer to your true self? I dunno, just a thought x
