The Spartans - Part 1 of 3 (Ancient Greece Documentary) | Timeline

Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK The Spartans chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most extreme civilisations the world has ever witnessed. A civilization that was founded on discipline, sacrifice and frugality where the onus was on the collective and the goal was to create the perfect state, and the perfect warrior. Classical historian Bettany Hughes reveals the secrets and complexities of everyday Spartan life: homosexuality was compulsory, money was outlawed, equality was enforced, weak boys were put to death and women enjoyed a level of social and sexual freedom that was unheard of in the ancient world. It was a nation of fearsome fighters where a glorious death was treasured. This can be aptly demonstrated by the kamikaze last stand at Thermopylae, where King Leonidas and his warriors fought with swords, hands and teeth to fend off the Persian invaders and show the rest of the world what it meant to be Spartan. Sparta was ruthlessly militaristic and founded on a belief that good order and justice protected against chaos and lawlessness. Policed by secret spies the society was supported by a nation of slaves so all Spartan men had to do was fight. Boys were indoctrinated with the Spartan code of death and glory, separated from their mothers at seven and left to fend for themselves. It led Aristotle to comment that Sparta "turned its children into animals." The training continued throughout adolescence, the most able boys being let loose as death squads preying on the slave population to keep them quiet. It cannot lay claim to the philosophers or artists of Athens but Sparta contributed as much to western civilisation as Athens did. Indeed it was Sparta, not Athens that was the first city to offer citizenship to its inhabitants. To many, the ideals formed 2500 years ago in Sparta can be seen as a fore-runner of modern-day totalitarianism. By setting out to create a perfect society protected by perfect warriors, Sparta made an enemy of change. A collapsing birth-rate, too few warriors, rebellious slaves, and outdated attitudes to weaponry and warfare combined to sow the seeds of Sparta's destruction. Eventually the once great warrior state was reduced to a stop for Roman tourists who came to view the bizarre sado-masochistic rituals. Documentary first broadcast in 2003. Content licensed from DRG. i wish they put these scholars behind a desk then just showed us the visualizations and dramatizations. Something about a middle aged lady walking through Greece in jeans just kills the immersion for me, and yet half of the documentaries follow this type lol.

The Greek Alamo, a Delaying Battle that cost the life's of all who chose to stay, giving the rest of their people time to gather their forces for final Victory over a power greater than their own. Like all legends, exaggerated over time and added to enhance the moment, but because a few chose to stay and die, History was charged and the Greek's began to see what they could accomplish when they came together as one people. A Turing Point in their History as the Alamo was in ours and remembered and treated the same way, as it became Legend. Would the Greek's be the same without this to inspire them? Without this battle, would there even be a Greek People? Probably not, as they would have been crushed by the Persians. Would there have been a Alexander without the Spartans? Probably not, they laid the Foundation Alexander built on later. Believing they were more than the equal of anyone else, because of what the 300 Spartans did. It didn't matter that there was far more than just 300 Spartans there, it was the 300 who were remembered and written into Legend, showing how Greek's should act against Overwhelming odds and what they could accomplish.

A minor, and perhaps regrettably forgotten, episode in the history of scholarship was the attempt to emphasize the etymology of Doron with the meaning of 'hand'. This in turn was connected to an interpretation of the famous lambda on Spartan shields, which was to rather stand for a hand with outstanding thumb than the initial letter of Lacedaimon.[18]Given the origin of the Spartan shield lambda legend, however, in a fragment by Eupolis, an Athenian comic poet, there has been a recent attempt to suggest that a comic confusion between the letter and the hand image may yet have been intended. Distinctions of languageEdit Just saying Dor is not Greek word 😉 I will say no more

2:07 It's famous for at least 3 things (and probably more). The brevity of their speech was iconic and famous even in their own day. One liners like "Come and take them" and "If". Among misunderstood stories at Thermopylae is that it was the Phocians and Locrians who were willing to make the stand on the field. Leonidas was initially taking a more opportunistic choice by retreating to a much more advantageous in the inner land around Isthmus of Korinthos along with other Greek contingents. So, the notion of "kamikaze" Spartans is highly incorrect one....

Democracy was the worst invention in all of human history, other than that the Greeks are perhaps the greatest people who ever lived. The Spartans were Fascist before it was cool.
Tullus Sulla (2 months ago)

Tullus Sulla (2 months ago)
+Vincent his Society and philology was more Roman then Greek, although the Roman Republic/Empire did get their influence/Theme from Greece, so i guess your half-correct.

Tullus Sulla - I know I was just being provocative. Although it should be mentioned that Mussolini modeled much of his philosophy on Spartan civilization.

ok another american clueless documentry, just do what u do best and leave the history and arts to their creators, go make a movie really, 70% of this doc is wrong, i dont know where to start.... sparta had the greatest art and philosophy architect they had everything, what about Lycourgos the one who created first in the world the constitution laws justice and so on...? they were even better than the athenians who were already known as No 1 globally, Spartans at some point they just choose to focus on war art thats all.. anyway waste of time even to talk about it in here judging from the comments i can imagine the audience..

Every civilisation in ancient times had slaves, it was normal for them. The documentary demonised spartans. Greeks considered persians as barbarians and it was justyfied beacuse the full-right citizens in sparta was indyviduals taking part even in elections of authorities. In persia every man was treated like a dog without right. Ruler could do with him whatever he wanted.

Keep in mind, Alexander the Great had the good sense to stay well clear of Sparta. Read it, learn it... live it.
Ye4rZero (1 month ago)
Sparta was a shell of itself by Alexanders day. There was nothing to gain for him & too many years of war had left it unable to field a worthwhile force. NO army is so good it can fight constantly without wearing down, and the Spartans didn't have the advantage of a massive population base.
