No Country for Old men - Javier Bardem self surgery

937 ratings | 264821 views
No Country for Old Men is a 2007 American thriller written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name. The film stars Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin, and tells the story of an ordinary man to whom chance delivers a fortune that is not his, and the ensuing cat-and-mouse drama, as three men crisscross each other's paths in the desert landscape of 1980 West Texas. Themes of fate, conscience and circumstance re-emerge that the Coen brothers have previously explored in Blood Simple and Fargo. In the 2007 film No Country for Old Men, Anton Chigurh, played by Javier Bardem, cleans and stitches his own wounds with stolen supplies, after his leg is badly injured by a shotgun blast. He first disinfects the site of the injury with a solution of iodine, then injects an anesthetic (lidocaine) before suturing the wound. So... He's a war doctor and had money to rent a hotel room but no money for medicines. Hollywood
Nic Tarace (2 months ago)
rockdj8566 you dumbass. Of course he has money to buy medicine. But to fix a bullet wound or to use drugs as he does, you can’t just show up at the pharmacy like this and buy whatever you want. To get all those products without medic or question he has to steal it. He is a hitman. He was wounded. He can’t just go to doc or hospital to get fixed. Bullet wounds or bullet injuries have to be déclaré to police, always. That’s the law.

Not a wimpier out him. He picks buckshot out of leg like he’s clipping his finger nails! Lol 😂

Yeah well he used lidocaine. Also that didn't look like the pellets themselves. Mostly just shrapnel. Wasn't very deep. Anton is a badass, but not a superhuman.

Come someone tell me.....wouldn't a hot bath be a bad idea when bleeding like that?...wouldn't that cause more bleeding from making the blood thinner?
Tom Baker (1 month ago)
Wouldn't a wound like that require some way to "close" it...seems like muscle and such would be exposed....I don't know...just seems something that deep would pretty much incapacitate you.

Feels Man, how the fuck did you know it got infected dumbshit? Were you fucking there? Fuck you and fuck your family. Your mother is a fucking whore.
Feels Man (3 months ago)
It's not like he cut his artery. It was just surface that was injured. And it got infected.
Potato Gunn (4 months ago)
Tom Baker, he used warm water to soak off the blood that dried and probably let the water get cold to slow his bleeding so he could operate.

He used lidocaine as local anesthetic. You can extract it from heavy duty anal lube using sodium hydroxide.

Sorry can someone tell me what he did with the tape and the cotton balls and the top of the box for the cotton balls?
Feels Man (3 months ago)
I think he taped the paper cover from the bag to close the opening of the gas tank, in order for it to take more time to explode. So that the fire must burn through the paper (and possibly cotton balls) first.

I still wonder how this film got a 15 certificate. The amount of bloody violence, and shots of violent body trauma and injury, in my opinion move it towards the 18 mark. A low 18 admittedly but an 18 none the less. I have similar feelings about The Dark Knight and TDKR.
rgqfdhxhh (5 months ago)
Because ratings are shit at judging psycological violence, they just have a simple checklist. Here you have a few wounds, deaths but nothing really hardcore, the violence all comes from the coldness of the killings rather than the killings themselves.

MY BOY A BD ON FUCKIN LAMRON AND THEM this is where you are wrong kiddo. This guys purpose ain’t to take whatever he wants in pharmacy, but just what he needs to fix himself up as he can’t go to the doctor or to hospital. J.G Stoner (2 years ago)
Also interesting is that all of these can still be purchaced from stores today. Most, in bulk. It's how I find and bust dog fighting rings :-)+nonplayerzealot4
nonplayerzealot4 (2 years ago)
I think an antibiotic injection is a logical conclusion being that he already injected Lidocaine into the area, which would provide enough pain relief for a few hours. Plus, the leap could be easily made considering he grabbed a bottle of distilled water and iodine and he boiled his tweezers. That showed Anton's basic knowledge of the seriousness of infection. Impossible to say what antibiotic it was, but this could be a possibility (Rocephin). http://tinyurl.com/hxj5tv6 It would seem to fit the kind of wound and Staph bacteria Anton was probably concerned about. I see cellulitis listed as a condition for its use, an external layer kind of infection.
J.G Stoner (2 years ago)
it MIGHT be safely assumed that anton chigurh was not a licensed physician.
degree7 (2 years ago)
+Nick There is no way that second injection is morphine, that would be enough to kill a horse. It must be some kind of antibiotic he injected into his leg at the end there.

In a lot of ways this is the scene that demonstrates how he ultimately gets what's coming to him in the end with his final injury. He can't go to the hospital and his mental state doesn't give him anyone to lean on. Granted, he's psychotic enough to where it doesn't matter. "If the rule you follow has led you here, what good was the rule?"
Nick C (3 years ago)
I think that was the idea. There was something there in that character.
Alejandro Medina (3 years ago)
+Nicholas Costi  >Feel guilt > Chigurh Choose one.
valar (3 years ago)
+Nicholas Costi think the dream speech counters what some people think is the nihilistic tone of the movie.  I don't think it's nihilistic.  The sheriff is beaten at the end but then he has a dream that his father has passed him on the road (died before him) and lights a fire for him in the dark, so that even in death he will be waiting for him.  Or that the light never goes out.  That's the obvious interpretation but the language is really good.
Nick C (3 years ago)
I think the difference is that with nazis their was statism and deontoligical beliefs that Hitler used to rise to power. Anton doesn't have a following. I say the west because the film is ultimately, to me, about lawlessness. The only reason the sherriff survived at the end was because he didn't reckon with Anton. This film (And book I imagine) is a beautiful piece of art because it is open ended. The sherriff got to survive precisely because he had the gut instinct not to reckon with senselessness. Llewelyn died because he decided to spend a night drinking and cheating on his wife. It just happened that way, though. The ultimate message I take from the film is that all violence is senseless. That's why the speech with his friend at the end of the film is so important to the crux of the movie. Particularly the line "anything else is vanity." Llewelyn (Younger and egotistical) stopped caring about the money and his wife. It became about his pride and it got him in the end. Anton got his in the end either way as everyone ultimately does. It could be a car crash or a murder. I still seek to interpret the dream speech, though I get what it's saying. It's a poetic movement of a film at its core.
valar (3 years ago)
+Nicholas Costi I wouldn't say 'The West', but humanity in general has a capacity for violence which can be reduced or unleashed depending on the individual or the circumstances. Interesting point about Anton.  Cold-blooded killers are often losers, when you get right down to it.  Hitler is of course the byword for merciless brutality and he was a sad sack mess of neuroses and frustrations who took it out on everyone - even himself at the end.  You can find similar elements in the personalities of other notorious villains of history.  Killers like Anton are much like them, just with a lower body count.

+John Edward Ofcourse it's possible.
Greg Alman (3 years ago)
+John Edward The problem with going to the hospital is that he has a gunshot wound - hospitals have to report every firearms injury to the police. As for the self surgery, I don't see why not. It's already been made clear this guy is pretty much a badass, and the only real roadblock to performing this self surgery would be the exquisite pain of having buckshot in your thigh.
